Received my MBP 16 PM today, but the Magsafe cable appears to be DOA.

The machine charges fine from both my TB3 dock, and it also charges fine using the new power brick with USB-C power cable(and the one from my 2017 15"), so the issue seems to be related to the cable.

When attached, the cable does not light up, and the machine does not indicate that its being charged.

I contacted support and they had me update to 12.0.1, and completely power down the machine, close lid give it 30secs, etc.

Neither worked. So I'll be contacting them again for a replacement cable.

Did anyone else have an issue like this?

Hi, I have the same problem with my brand new 14 inch MacBook Pro.

I had been using the USB C cable from my LG monitor for power and video signal, but after work today the monitor wasn't displaying anything and the macBook did not see power was connected and I also had no video signal. The cable from the monitor did have power, as I tested it with something else. I then tried the MagSafe charger and also no power. After switching the mains off and on to the MagSafe brick, the LED came on for a second or two and then off again.

After unplugging and plugging in the USB C cable a few times and rebooting, it now works again!!!

I've just upgraded my 2009 desktop iMac and 2010 MacBook Pro with this new 14 inch MacBook Pro and I'm a little disappointed that my old computer are still working after 10 years, and this isn't after a single day.

I've got the latest 12.0.1 operating system and tried everything DConroy has tried.

Any help would be great.

What are you connecting your MagSafe cable to?
I have the 140W charger, started with that. Also used the brick with that came with my 2017 15" MBP. No change. Tried different outlets, and outlet strips as well.

Have an appointment with Apple tomorrow to test other cables, etc. Will update.

The power brick definitely outputs power from the USB C port as I connected my iPhone to it using a USB C to lightning cable and the phone started charging. So this would point to the MagSafe cable being the problem, but when that cable is plugged in and connected to the MacBook, I get that very slight tingle on the metal, some call it the 'micro vibration', so there must be power getting to the MacBook, it just doesn't say it has power and doesn't charge.

Have you got this sorted? I just read another post where someone had their charger constantly flashing amber and the charging chime would keep coming on and off. They did a full erase of the machine and apparently it’s now working.
Surely you shouldn’t have to do that for a fix. Imagine if your battery was completely empty and you needed to charge it, it has to be hardware related, not software.
My old 2010 MacBook Pro hasn’t had a problem like this and it’s still working to this day.

Update...

The power brick will charge my MacBook Pro if I use a USB C to USB C cable, so it has to be the supplied MagSafe to USB C cable.

I phoned Apple and they are going to send a new one, but I had to pay for it and the money will be refunded when they receive the old one back!!!

Hopefully the issue is the cable and not the MagSafe port on the laptop.

Whatever be the case, everything is in warranty, so anything can be replaced without any headaches.

Same issue over here.
- no LED on magsafe cable
- doesn't charge via magsafe (USB-C is good)

Apple is going to send me a replacement cable.

While unboxing there was something odd. A handwritten "D" on the Paper magsafe case. See Screenshot:

Does seem like D for Defective, and it may have just went out of Quality Control somehow. Other poster should report if they have a similar alphabet on their MagSafe cable package.

This did turn out to be the cable. Went to the store today and we tested it with a display models cable. He had to take a new cable off the shelf as they had no repair stock. All sorted here. Real happy it ended up not being the port!
