    Problem Scenario:

Google and Safari occasionally slow down in functionality and checking the Activity Monitor, indicates they are hanging [ see attached pics ]

This occurs within seconds of opening Google Chrome and Safari, but the browsers still continue to work.

    Steps to resolve :

Re-installed - Did not resolve issue
Reset Preferences - Did not resolve issue
    Re-installed w/o ANY additional Plug-ins - Did not resolve

    ---------------------------

Google Chrome Version: 29.0.1547.76 [ latest stable build ]
    Safari Version: 7.0 (9537.71)

    Mac OS : OS X 10.9 (13A584)

    System 1: Mid 2012 15" RMBP / 2.7 Ghz i7 / 16GB RAM / 768 GB SSD

    System 2: Mid 2013 13" MBA / i7 / 8GB / 256 SSD

Any one else having this issue ? Any known resolution ?

    Thanks!

    Solution to Chrome :

Preferences -> Show Advanced Settings -> Disable "Enable phishing and malware protection"

Also, disable Google Cloud Printing [ if enabled ]

-= Oh well, problem back again.... =-

Is there any point in actually doing this though?

Well, it was one of the suggestions I found... Worked for 5 mins and back to square one.

Re-installed again with Version 30.0.1599.66 now and the bug persists. Time to file a bug report with Apple and Google. :(

Atleast Version 30.0.1599.66 isn't hogging any CPU [ at this point ] while memory usage is also down to 94-97 MB from 150-200 in the previous version.

Yeah I mean from what I remember (at least for canary) every single build has had this issue since Mavericks came out. The error messages have been the same or similar for each build. The main one I come across in the console is:

    Code:
Process unable to create connection because the sandbox denied the right to lookup com.apple.coreservices.launchservicesd and so this process cannot talk to launchservicesd. : LSXPCClient.cp #426 ___ZN26LSClientToServerConnection21setupServerConnectionEiPK14__CFDictionary_block_invoke() q=com.apple.main-thread
The thing is that I haven't actually had any problems with Chrome. My guess is come Mavericks official release this will be fixed but until then I'd just deal with the red text in activity monitor because there doesn't appear to actually be any noticeable performance issue (at least for me).

You might be right. Since it's happening on both Macs, it's more than likely an integration issue.

I'm wondering why Safari is causing the same issue too..

So, this issue still seems to persist in the official release of Mavericks.

google chrome helper not responding is a known google chrome bug (caused by some hacks chrome uses to rename their processes in the activity monitor), and anyone running chrome in mavericks will see it.

here's the chrome bug report: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=304860
