The original and the latest SE were and are about having an inexpensive/entry level iPhone with an up to date SoC.It depends on how you look at the iPhone SE/Mini.
If you consider the iPhone SE to be "The Cheap Phone" then the 2020 SE revision is the "true" iPhone SE follow-up.
If you consider the iPhone SE to be "The Small Variant of the Current Flagship" then the iPhone 12 Mini is the "true" iPhone SE follow-up.
I'm in the latter camp, personally. I'll pay whatever necessary to get the smallest iPhone possible as long as I'm not losing out on specs.
Are you typing each letter individually or swipe to text? As that will make the typing experience better on the Mini compared to the type each letter out routine you had with the 5S and SE if not running iOS14.I’m playing with the iphone 12 mini ‘wallpaper’ that macrumors put up to simulate the size. Not sure its really a one-handed phone. At least you can hold with one hand but it seems like typing will still need two thumbs. original SE/5S really feels like the limit for proper one-handedness, at least without doing some hand gymnastics
I think you will change your mind before you know it.Mildly interested but not this gen
Maybe 2nd mini or something if I wanna switch it up
I’m loving my 12 pro coming from se2
Also a bit worried battery will be lacking and it will screen size wise just be a taller se2 (akin to 4s to 5)

I bought the 12 Pro and couldn’t even make it 24 hours. It went back the next morning because one handed usability went out the door. My 11 Pro really is just the perfect size.I am finding the 12 pro harder to hold than my old 11 pro. After spending some time debating with myself if I want the mini, my sweet spot would have been the 5.8" with the square edges to shrink it a down a bit more.

SameTo me the 12 is the mini and the 12 pro max is the normal sized phone
