I know some people won't be able to resist calling this thread stupid, because it is. That being said, my HD in my new i7 is fairly loud, but it doesn't bother me in the least bit. In a strange kind of way, I actually like the sound of the HD, it reminds me a little of the sound of rain. Im I the only one?

(The dog whistle noise on the iMac I returned on the other hand drove me insane, I would have stabbed my pen through its yellow little face if that wouldn't have prevented apple from accepting it back:D)

Think the OP needs to go see a professional of a certain capacity.:p

I think it would drive me insane being able to hear my Mac's hard drive.

You can't hear your hard drive clicking at all even when accessing something? Every computer I've ever owned or used had some hard drive noise (unless it was an SSD, obviously)

Nope, this computer is only a few days old so if it bothered me I'd exchange it. Granted, I think its pretty normal operating noise for a Seagate, so returning it wouldn't be the right thing to do. But honestly, as strange as it is, I like the noise.

While the HDD of my iMac (i7 2.9Hgz) is cleary audible, I would not call it unacceptable or out of ordinary. This is not the most silent drive I have ever seen, but nothing really bad either. I used to have a WD drive and a Samsung drive in my PC which were both louder. Would be nice of course if Apple would have included a more silent drive, but hey...

I guess this is all relative. I used to have an old PC that had a 20 GB WD HDD that was easily twice as loud as the Seagate in my iMac. But they have gotten progressively quieter over the years. So now it seems annoying.

If the HDD was in an Mac Pro, then it would be a lot less noticeable and I wouldn't mind so much. I'll see how things go at the Apple Store this Saturday when I have my Genius Bar appointment.

Hey, consumers want performance and these drives deliver good desktop performance but they produce a little bit more noises to achieve that. I'm glad Apple didn't stick a Green Save The Earth hard disk in the iMac...

Anyway, my Seagate drive is only making noises when I start the machine up and start applications, otherwise it's silent. That's normal for any hard disk.

Oh thank God, I thought I was the only person in the world who felt that way. I don't have an iMac but I have a MacPro and you can hear the HD quite clearly when it's on the desk (which is the only reason I keep that monster up there). I have always liked the sound of hard drives, UNLESS my computer is underpowered and it's chugging away constantly while I sit there waiting for something... but that hasn't been the case (at least for me) in a long time. Whenever I buy a new computer, whether or not I can hear the HD working is actually a factor for me (albeit not the deal-breaker). When people started complaining about the loud hard drives on their iMac i5s (etc.), I thought to myself, "now's the time to buy!"

And here I've been living in silent shame all these years. Maybe we should start a support group of some kind for those of us afflicted with this debilitating disease. :)

I can't speak for people who actually have extremely noisy hard drives. My iMac's hard drive rumbles from time to time, but it rumbles just like any other normal high-capacity drive. I love the way it sounds, makes me feel like my machine is working.

My new 24" iMac is really really quiet, it has a gentle rumbling sound when its working on someting. Nice sound.

But just as my old soccer ball 7 year old iMac was saying goodbye to its hard drive, it began to make a rhythmic never ending noise. Not any scratching or bad sounds like you hear on the test site that IDs the noise of failing hard drives, but just a gentle non-stop noise.
Yup, the disk failed that afternoon.

Thank god I had all my pictures and music and some files on an external HD, I just moved the pictures and music to my year old 24" Mac.

I now have to figure how to de-activate iTunes on the old one so I will be able to use it on the new 27" iMac when I get it soon.
Phone call to Apple I suppose?
