the iphone is cool and of course i would like to get one. but i don't need it. i like the fact that my cell phone is simple and i can just stuff it in my pocket. i don't worry about dropping it. if i got the iphone, i would have to take better care of it and worry about it. carrying around a $600 phone is a lot more worry than carrying around a free one.

did anyone else decide to not get an iphone for the same reason? that they didn't really need one?

A friend of mine who hasn't gotten an iPhone yet was waiting until he received confirmation that you can take the iPhone SIM and put it into an AT&T phone and use it. He has a Sony Walkman that he loves and thinks is perfectly fine for him. Now that he knows he doesn't have to take his iPhone EVERYWHERE, he feels more comfortable planning, but he's not in a rush.
Not your question, but my phone was crap, so either way I had to do something.

I almost feel bad for people that need the power of the iPhone.

But hell ya I got one and love having the power.

I'm not. I don't use my cell that often, I'm on T-Mobile, and I have a 30 gig iPod photo. I honestly cannot justify the purchase at this point in time. Plus that $499 or $599 will come in handy when Apple finally updates the much overdo Mac Pro.................at some point....................before I die...

I am sure that very few of us NEED it. That never stopped me before. Why should it stop me now? :D :D :D

I love my toys and LOVE that I will only have to drag ONE around now.

    Me.

I'll let other people spend their money to buy the latest and greatest.

Also, don't have extra cash and am currently a verizon user.

    Me.

My RAZR can do everything I need it to, and in some cases it can do more than the iPhone (granted, the iPhone can also do many things my RAZR can't).

...It would be nice to be able to combine my phone and iPod, but not worth $500 + $20/month.

Besides, I'd much rather wait for rev. 2! :)

If someone was honestly happy with their cell phone AND had a working iPod, I am not sure I would switch.

But, I wasn't happy AND am very glad I did it.

    Very much worth it.

I have a G1 iPod and an annoying (free) RAZR. I think it is time to upgrade both! :)

That's one of the big reasons I didn't get one (I have managed to survive with nothing but the simplest cell phone for years), but a few things could've easily moved me into the category of "don't need it, but getting it anyway." For example, I have a Sprint contract; if the iPhone had come out on Sprint (with EVDO), I would've had a very hard time resisting it. Having a year left on my Sprint contract gives me a good excuse to wait and see what the next iPhone will offer -- I'm patient and stingy enough to hold out and avoid a termination fee. Knowing that they will probably bump up the capacity specs in a year (to 16GB or hopefully 32GB) was another reason to hold out -- I didn't want to feel the burn of buying something expensive, only to see it improve before I could justify an upgrade. And, like many people, I'm holding out hope that 3G comes along in iPhone 2.0. But none of those reservations would've stopped me if I really needed email and/or the web in my pocket. Since I don't, I figure I can wait until the iPhone is everything I originally hoped it would be.

I have one and I'm not worried about dropping it... I have a silicon case around it, and if it did break I'd probably just submit a claim through my personal articles insurance policy or buy a new one. If you'd be really worried about dropping it and cannot afford to get another one, you're right - it's probably better that you don't get it.

For me, my Razr is annoying and 2 yrs old. The iPhone is two (3? hehe) devices in one, very useful and easy to use, and not to mention tiny.

I don't think anyone really NEEDS a piece of technology except maybe respirators and life support, stuff like that. :)

How do you define "don't need"? You really don't need a cell phone at all. You don't need a car, either...you can bike or take the bus or carpool. You don't need a computer..people survived without them for thousands of years.

There's alot of stuff we "don't need".

However, if someone does not have an email account (like my dad, who is not allowed to, HAHA), and does not use the web, then the iPhone's value would be significantly reduced. In that sense, I can understand what you are saying.

Well, my wife's giving birth to twin boys any day now so, yeah, I didn't buy an iPhone because spending $600 on a phone seems like a form of child abuse in this context. Given different circumstances, I probably would have been in line.

There must be very few people who can truly say that they need an iPhone, but if you want one and can afford it, then why not?

Bah, "need" is only the excuse to tell your SO. If I only bought gadgets I "needed" I would have 1/100th of the ones I have now =P

You can't work efficiently unless you work in style! ...and distracted by all the cool features like video podcasts.

I'm not trying to be rude here, but reading this post I have to wonder why you're even in this forum then? If you decided not to get an iphone because you're happy with what you have, why come in to the iphone section and tell us?

But you always need cool things regardless of the functionality it serves you.

honestly I didn't think I would be using it as much as I have. I'm lovin' it.

a better question might be why come into this forum and tell me that i shouldn't be in it? you are being rude.

i thought this was a forum to discuss the iphone. i thought the decision on whether or not to buy one was a legit question. i wanted to discuss this with others who may be in a similar situation. if you have an iphone, then this isn't the thread for you.

well, i have 2 laptops, a powermac, 4 ipods, and a cell phone. i have wifi at home and work. i just can't see the need for the iphone right now. do i really need to check my email on the drive home?

Oh I needed one. I've been going crazy waiting for it to be released. Now that I have one I feel a little more sane. So, yup, needed it. :D

I need an iPhone because it replaced over $1000 worth of electronics for me and I can now carry them all in one simple yet sleek little package with a nice shiny apple on it.

I bought it and I don't need it. The moment that I broke the plastic on the box I knew it was something I didn't need but it was something I would enjoy
