Remember years back rabid guys on the forum here arguing Apple will never make a large phone - and they were rabid.

Had more than a few heated arguments with them.

Even those so called 'tech journalists' had some who said it would never happen.

This aged well:

Phablet back in the early 2010's was a 5inch or more phone 😅

Thought now was a good time to stick the boot in as we await the 12 Pro Max at 6.7 in

Though guess that breed of naysayer is off naysaying something else Apple won't do. Round Apple watch faces, or whatever it is.

Doesn’t mean it was a good idea, or Apple made a good large phone. Still so much to be desired from the Max. No split screen apps, just tons of wasted space. Also looks like a massive surf board phone.

Apple had to join the large phone market with the 6 series. Android was exploding with large phones, and Apple couldn’t miss out. That’s really all Apple has done is made the iPhone screen bigger. In terms of innovation in the large screen space, nothing much at all. So yes they did make a big phone, but thats all they really did. Half hearted effort at best. Throw in some better camera tech this year to try to boost the market for it. Apple could do so much better. Start with a much better design of the max.

Some in the past were wrong about what Apple would do in the future. Past action is not always indicative of future action and results.

Not a big deal and not sure why it matters to restate the obvious (re: past arguments here and elsewhere).

Robert.

Not everything needs to be so serious. Ligthen up with the Spock act, we're messing around with something inconsequential about who was right and wrong about phone sizes! Pull yourself together man 😅

Apple make incredible phones, what planet are you on. Who cares about split screen apps, 1%? What next, some guffwaffle about refresh rates 😅

Only thing half hearted around here is your lazy criticism of incredibly talented people making incredible products.

Tell you what, when you can so much as get your foot in the door at the iPhone design team, let alone work your way up to lead it, then you get to call their efforts 'half-hearted'.

Some wild people out tonight haha!

Um what? I didn’t say they didn’t make good phone. I said the max is wasted potential. There is so much more they can do with it. Most people agree with that, so I am not sure what planet you live on.

There where also as many people who said Apple would never make a smaller device again either...

"People don't want a smaller device, embrace the bigger phones etc..."

Technology always goes through trends and changes but with something like a phone as has been mentioned so many times already, manufacturers can only change so much without completely breaking the mould and risking a complete sales flop. Size will always vary, weight will increase and then decrease as the internals advance and get smaller and new tech comes along and gets added into the device.

I think this year is the first for a long time where Apple have tried to cater for almost everyone.

It is fun to look back at who said what about tech devices and when they said it. Apple themselves, in their advertising, used to say 3.5" was the perfect size for a phone screen because it allowed any part of the screen to be reached with the thumb when held in one hand. Yet they were obliged to go with the flow and offer what the public wanted, and it could be said they've made a colossal success of their phone business.

When the original 5.3" screen Samsung Galaxy Note was launched in 2011 some journalists were sceptical that people would be prepared to carry such an "enormous" device in their pockets, but 10 million were sold and since then countless millions of people have pocketed much larger phones. The current Note 20 has a 6.7" screen, same as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, does this mean phone screens will get even bigger? Search me, I've no idea!

The Note 20 is more narrow correct?

In some of their defense did not late era Steve Jobs or early era Tim Cook themselves scoff at the idea of “Phablets”?

Now Mr. Jobs was more than capable of reversing his mind state when he clearly saw the direction that technology was going so I have no doubt, that had he’d lived to see the dawn of what larger screens on smartphones were capable of, that he would have went full steam ahead with the iphone 6 Max; but at the time, with Apple’s track record of “thinner/smaller”, it wasn’t hard to see why people would think it wasn’t happening. Hell the iPhone 5 with the four inch screen was considered a big compromise in screen size from Apple at the time

Jony Ive admitted Apple was designing the iPhone 6 as early as 2011 with displays larger than 6". All of those designs were created while Jobs was in charge.

It's clear that Apple knew phablets were the future but Apple had already bet on the iPhone 5s. Apple's marketing machine had to work with that fact.

The only reason Apple is launching small iPhone is because of price. If you want a cheap 4G iPhone for $399, you have to live with a 4.7" display. If you want a cheap 5G iPhone, you have to live with a 5.4" display. These devices are clearly intended to satisfy price points and not intended as mainstream products.

Why do you think the small phone are jus for price? The mini has the exact same specs as the 12 which is the most popular iPhone.

Unlike the 6.1" model, there is no 5.4" Pro.

But it’s not a SE type phone, it’s a full featured with current specs.
It's more premium than SE, but that doesn't mean Apple didn't have price in mind.

The iPhone 12 mini is needed to fight the countless number of other cheap 5G phones. If Apple really were making a small device for everyone, they would at least offer a 512GB storage option and 6GB RAM.

I disagree. They know their market. The price point from $500-$800 is the key price that Apple needs. The XR and 11 were their top selling phones the last several years. That’s where the money is for them. They know adding a pro mini just wouldn’t get that much traction because people looking for a small phone, aren’t looking for a pro style phone. The market for small and complete features is bigger than people think.

I disagree. I actually think split screen has no place on a 6 to 7 inch phone because it gets tight and cluttered. On tablets it’s fine. If they ever do bring split screen I won’t care for it. There was more criticism for the iPhone not having picture in picture so now it has it. There was complaints about not having widgets or being able to change the icons. Now they have it. There were complaints about not being able to do themes and now they have it. Trust me there will always be complaints and people who aren’t satisfied. Higher refresh displays first came out in 2017 on smart phones. People have been bitching about that ever since as a complaint. I get headaches with these complaints so I do my best to ignore them since I prefer reading things that are more constructive.

Well the plus has never made sense to me. I had the 6 plus, and Apple never made use of the plus and max. It’s not at one handed device, so it should be made to use all the space. You may not like split screen, but I do. As for the other stuff, that was stuff the entire line needed not the bigger phones.

I believe Apple made the big iPhone because they had to not because they wanted to. The max is just because the fans wanted them. That’s why they don’t put forth the effort to make the software more unique for the max.

My reason for wanting the max is better battery life, easier typing, bigger screen for media consumption, better legibility, and better camera sensors for this year. And now you want to split screen on top of all that? Lol. Just kidding but I can survive without that. You can always carry around an android phone for back up or secondary to fulfill all of your dreams

I have the 12 pro, that’s my thing. I have been asking for a Apple to make a reason for me to upgrade to the max. It hasn’t happen. I am happy with the smaller iPhone, I just wouldn’t mind a max if there was enough taken advantage of in a max. I get all your reason for wanting it, that’s just not a big deal to me.

I also remember people saying that Apple would be doomed year after year after year. First, it would at the hands of cheaper android handsets, then smart speakers, then folding phones. Whatever the tech buzzword of the month was, As though Apple were some special snowflake incapable of innovating on its own terms.

Your point being?
