For the last few weeks I've been having problems with my iPhone X locking up for 30 to 60 seconds or more. Screen and lock button are unresponsive but taps and presses to seem to buffer up and get played when it finally wakes from it's stupor.

It seems to happen most often when I've just finished driving somewhere and try to open the phone. I have an LTE hotspot in my car and usually run Waze while I'm driving so I'm wondering if there's some kind of network operation that's timing out on the now nonexistent wifi connection.

Twice now, it has gone into SOS mode because of my repeated pressing of the lock button durring it's mini-coma. Very annoying, especially if it locks back up during the SOS cancelation count-down and ends up calling 911 (which it did this morning)!

The behavior seems to have started after updating to iOS 11.4.1 from 11.4.0.

Is anyone else seeing anything like this?

Hadn't thought about it but yes I've seen something similar - don't run some of the stuff you run but I have seen that issue - open and app but nothing happens when I press a button on it - then 15-30 seconds later it all works fine

Maybe it has, if I think about it. But it hasn’t happened often at all and for the most part everything is smooth.

It’s nothing I would’ve complained about or even noticed until this thread.

Like if I remember right it would get “stuck” on an app for a second or 2.

I’ve noticed Tapatalk is crashing repeatedly after the last update, not sure if only on X.
Haven’t noticed any other type of lockout.

There was an old thread for people who upgraded to 11.4 who had problems with the screen locking up on apps. Some had mentioned Waze. I haven’t used Waze in months and I experienced the same locking up myself. Sometimes force closing the app works for me. Going to 11.4.1 seems to have reduced, but not eliminated the problem for me.

I haven't had any issues like this at all.

iOS isn't perfect. Ive got a phone running iOS 9.3.5 and occasionally (rarely) an app will freeze for awhile.

That’s a red herring. Nothing is perfect. That does doesn’t mean freezing is acceptable in an OS.

Stuff like this and the audio stutter are past the level of being acceptable. And they didn’t used to be so common in MAC OS and IOS.

We are in an era now where any old hardware is basically more than good enough. What you pay through the nose for with IOS is the smooth and seamless experience, on each device and across multiple ones. And if that isn’t protected and maintained, they will bleeed customers.

Was having these lockups more and more so I tried doing a network reset and it seemed to go away but a week or so later it started again.

Eventually it got so bad that it would hang for 10 minutes so I reset the whole phone back to factory spec and did not restore from backup. No issues for a few hours. Reset and and restored and the issues quickly resumed.

I swapped my sim into an old iPhone SE and restored to that and it was fine so I used that for about a day, planning on taking the phone into the genius bar.

On a whim I did another reset and restore and the problem has not returned for the last 3 days. Not sure why.

FWIW - I had recorded one of the occurances to illustrate what I was seeing:
.

At the 2:35 mark it goes into standby/sleep and I gave up waiting for it to wake back up and stopped recording at 3:15 - as I recall, it took another minute or two before the screen came back on. No spinner or Apple logo so I don't think it was rebooting.

A phone restart seems to have "fixed" it again as I did so on 9/7 and the behavior hasn't returned. I'll probably be upgrading to iOS12 today so hopefully the issue will be gone for good.
