Say you bill is $70 a month.
If you go 3 months without an iphone that's $210 wasted and being fed to AT&T for free.
It's not worth it unless you can make $210 more selling your iphone now, than you would if you sell it over the summer.

I believe the contract is only for service, and not the actual unit you own. Nothing stops you from putting your SIM card in another phone and using that. As long as you keep your service with AT&T, regardless of what phone you own, they're happy.
