Not seeing this making computers throw away/disposable/planned obsolescence angle because of storage. Storage needs one of those things known to never diminish and always grows. No internal drive system, ssd inparticular is not going to account for long term use these days. Laptop based anyway.
Full blown tower, sure, as space and interfaces there to tack on 4 (or more) drives. But even for a tower at some point, and maybe its me, if getting up to 4 tb of space its time to be looking at more dedicated storage solutions. A more true dedicated file server, NAS, etc. Especially if pics or vids involved. Or other this data is vital pack rat tendencies at play.
And buy a bigger internal becomes imo a vicious cycle really. I was in it. This next drive...it will be the answer to my needs. Just like the other one was. And the one before that.
Lots of external options exist to break this cycle. And maybe just my opinion but once getting to 1 tb range...external is the better option. There hasn't been leap and bounds in SSD tech in terms of size. if say 512 is cramping your style...I'd not be surprised 2 years later the 1 tb would as well. 15 years in IT support and been a user for longer. If you build it they will come. Nature abhors a vacuum..all that empty space will at least have a best effort attempt to fill it made by many.
Have a NAS and love it for this. 5 bay setup, 3 usable and 2 are there to cover drive fails (synology NAS, its their SHR-2 setup). Even went way over the top on projected storage. My case was years of seeing data use creep up and I said lets just not nickel and dime this anymore. Wise call on my part. I found an interest in video production of late. I am well covered space wise since I went big but that 8.1 tb I never thought I'd fill I know I will be reassessing 4-5 years from now.
Feeling the need to buy a new mbp every 2 years because disk space low and doing it? Money is here for that it would seem. Or use usb stuff, work whats best for tastes and wallet really. Or cloud...not partial to it but some are so worth the mention.
