Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the shineyness from the oil in your fingers ... not the trackpad wearing down? Or is it a combination of both? Fingers are naturally oily after all ...

I am fairly sure that your hands do not secrete oil. So the oil on your hands is from other parts of your body. So wash your hands in the morning and stop touching your face!

Oh come on! I think you people need to get out more. It's called 'use' Of course it will get a bit shiny. Most things get shiny when you rub them a lot.:D

My black Macbook's trackpad has a shiny patch. So what? It is still the most beautiful and cool laptop I've ever owned. I expect bits of my black Nano2 to get shiny too though bits of my black 60gig iPod have done the opposite and got quite scratched. Who cares?

But here's a foolprof way to stop it happening. Buy a brand new laptop and NEVER take it out of the box.

Given the age of the MacBook, that's kinda soon for a shiny patch if you ask me. My G4 PowerBook (8 months old) shows a VERY small amount of shine.

I don't have any issues with the trackpad on my black Macbook, it's 4 months old and in constatnt use. ( But I also use a mouse when possible.)

The space key is getting shiny on the right side, I always seem to hit space with my right thumb.

My work Dell PC's keyboard and touch pad get shiny because of heavy use (usually without the external keyboard and mouse). Typically, PC's touch pad is black. So, when it shines, it shines more noticeably than Apple's white touch pad.

So far, I have been able to keep all of my Mac's keyboard and touchpads in the mint condition because I use external keyboards/mouse/Wacom tablet and keyboards are also covered by iSkin. I also wash my hands before I use my Mac.

My white macbook has developed a very shiny patch in the center. I can see it very easily. I don't have to look very hard. I can see it even standing up and looking down at the macbook. So What? The shiny patch makes your macbook look cool and also gives it some character.

No one was saying it was a bad thing, so why are you?
