Never had this happen before in about 30 years of computing. I'm using our Dell Inspiron desktop at work (about a year old) connected to the default wired Dell keyboard that they include. I was having issues with an application (nothing to do with keyboard input), so I restarted the computer. Once the login screen came up, all of a sudden my keyboard doesn't respond. I figured it might have something to do with the USB extension cable I was using with it, so I plugged it directly into the computer. No response. Plugged it into my Mac. No response. It's like it's not even plugged in. Not a single key does anything. I still have keyboards from the 90s that work fine. Hard to believe a simple wired keyboard from 2021 just dies like that. And even stranger was how it happened to die at the precise moment I restarted the computer - it was working just fine literally just seconds before that.

I've had keyboards die. Not that new. But it happens.

My Razer Blackwidow 2014 does double typing and all kinds of funkiness before I changed the keyboard settings. That thing has seen some action though.

And what about the voltage? Maybe you're living out of the town and there was a voltage drop (or kind of) from el.network or power adapter as well as the peripheral device – leads to a short USB circuit.
Yeah, depends on and from, but I've faced a similar problem, and seems that culprits were connected peripherals/devices and power source (IDN el.grounding as well as el.interference?)

From all sudden – нou may have come across a defective copy

I had a bad Apple extended keyboard once, about 10 years ago. Only some keys worked at all, and it would hang the computer with beachballs all the time. Apple replaced it for me in-store.

Well at least SOME of your keys worked, lol! Mine went from 100% functioning to 0% in a few seconds. Was it that way out of the box or did it work ok for some time and then go bad?

I’m a middle school robotics teacher with a lab of 35 aged-like-a-fine-milk desktops in my classroom and have wired keyboards in my lab go bad on occasion. Usually in my case it’s the wire out the back of the keyboard frame that bends and slowly frays until it dies, though that usually takes a few years of being moved around. That’s the only way I’ve had ‘em die though personally. Even if the wires don’t look frayed, moving it around will cause the keyboard to connect and disconnect constantly.

This one's literally just been sitting there. Must've been some loose soldering joint inside or wiring that was damaged at the time of manufacturing that shorted out. Either that or somehow restarting the computer caused a USB power surge that only affected the keyboard and none of the other connected USB devices ??‍♂️
