Go to Afghanistan. You'll regret not doing it later on. I'm actually doing something similar, although the country I'm going to isn't nearly as dangerous. But, if I was offered Afghanistan, I'd go in a heartbeat.

Playing it safe with driving - Nope
Playing it safe with gambling - Nope
Playing it safe with stock market - Yep
Playing if safe with relationships - Sometimes
Playing it safe with parenting - Nope
Playing it safe with life decisions - Haven't so far :D

Yeah - that's a darn good summation.
Playing it safe sucks. A large amount of life is dangerous, more than we can stand to remind ourselves (we'd all go crazy if we obsessed on how many hazards we face each day, right?).

Life is not safe, but we can balance things out. Like so many others have said, if you're in a time in your life that you can take risks, do it. Some of the best things in my life have resulted from these risks.

G'luck with your decision!

It should also tell you that maybe you weren't paying them fairly in the first place. Ever think of that? Unfortunately, many employers don't. That says to an employee that their services aren't valued.

leek, i didn't gather that at all. it could be a reason, but i know where Jessica's coming from. i've never been an 'employer', but a manager and it was difficult to 'manage' expectations and performance. All of that, which includes pay, is really up to the individual. i had some people who were fine with their pay and others who were constantly bitching and wanting more, despite being at the high end of their pay band already. I had one lady, for whom i went to bat with upper mgmt to increase her pay. we did. 4 months later....wanted even more! some ppl can just never be satisfied. bottom line is that you can never please everyone and today's society is full of me, me, me, me people.....ppl who think they're worth far more than the position they are in. And yes, companies are nothing without employees, but you have to set the limits or companies wouldn't be in business.

Anyhoo, i just turned the tide of this chat a bit.

oh, and since i've been at home for 6 years with my boys and running my own biz, i hope 2 things happen: 1. i never have to go back to an office job or any job where i have to report to anyone else and 2. i hope i never have any employees.

back to the op. go go go go.

:)

Supposedly, according to the well known saying, "On their deathbed, no one ever wishes they worked more." (I forget the exact wording, but it goes something like that)

I guess I'm saying that because that is my situation now. I'm in the advertising business. I've been through 3 promotions and have always gotten glowing reviews- but the raises have been few and far between, if at all. Not to mention the fact that that a lot of us are seriously underpaid already (and when I say that, I mean the lower end of 5 figures). At the same time, the company always raves about how great we're doing financially- profits and productivity are up, blah, blah, blah. Then they lay people off. And when they take company-wide surveys, the employees rate the company very low almost completely across the board. Obviously someone's making money- wonder who?

And yes, I've been looking for another job. I've updated my resume and portfolio and have been sending them out when I can. I guess I'm just frustrated.

No, I've not played it safe. I've left places that are secure and kicked over the traces more than once. It's not always easy though. No matter how much you want to go, there's always something that makes it easier just to carry on with the status quo, but you can do that forever and end up doing nothing special. It can take courage to actually get up and go and leave your current life, even if you don't plan on it being for ever.

Okay, so you've got a good offer from Afghanistan. Is that where you really want to go? Is that the place that really draws you? Take the opportunity; the whole world's out there so follow your heart and go somewhere you really want to go.

I don't know if it helps, but read 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho.

I read it during a bus journey in Lao and it changed my life.

can I come??

Wow! What an opportunity...personally (as I'm in the same boat as you with no kids and no significant other) I would already be on a plane to Afghanistan ;) But, if you are still having trouble deciding, the only question I have for ya that I don't think was asked is, Do you have to sign a contract? If not, then go! Worst case scenario its not up ur alley you leave and come home...Best case scenario its a new life experience you will never forget and you earned some much needed mula!!

BTW, I think we all want to know, what line of work would you be doing over there??? for 9k my bags are already packed, PM me and I'll meet ya at the airport ;)

I'd go to Afganistan sounds like a cool expirience and at over 100k a year sounds fun to me.

Might be a bit dangerous (but who says that's a bad thing?)

ps. I second the line of work question what do I have to do in college to be sent to a hostile nation and make the big bucks? :)

As for the line of work, it would be installing/maintaining databases and software systems for NATO.
