    Is this Russian?

It is the name of a folder I found in my preferences tonight.

have no idea what it is. I have dragged it to my desktop until I figure it out.

    îtîë$tøˇ€Äîùÿ@îë&–î묉

If Russian, what does it mean? If not Russian, I wonder what it is?

Are there any contents within that folder? If so, copy n paste those file names here so we have a bit more to go on.

That's not cyrillic, the alphabet used with the russian language and derived from the greek alphabet, those are just symbols you can produce by using your keyboard by using OPTION/ALT+ or OPTION/ALT+SHIFT+ .
    Latin alphabet with OPTION/ALT+ :«∑€®†Ω¨⁄øπ•å‚∂ƒ©ªº∆@œæ‘¥≈ç√∫~µ∞…–
    Latin alphabet with OPTION/ALT+SHIFT+ : »„‰¸˝ˇÁÛØ∏°ÅÍ™ÏÌÓıˆflŒÆ’‡ÙÇ◊‹›˘˛÷—
    or
    Cyrillic alphabet with OPTION+ :јџќ®†њѓѕў‘“ъƒыћ÷©}°љ∆…эёђ≈≠µи™~≤≥“
    Cyrillic alphabet with OPTION+SHIFT+ :ЈЏЌ®†ЊЃЅЎ’”ЪƒЫЋ÷©{•Љ∆…ЭЁЂ≈≠µИ™~<>„

    Latin alphabet without OPTION: qwertuiopü+asdfghjklöä#yxcvbnm,.-
    Cyrillic looks like this:
    йцукенгшщз фывапролд ячсмить

It could've come from almost anywhere. If the folder is empty and your computer is running fine, then don't worry about it. In fact, if your computer is running fine then why are you poking around in your preferences folder?

That happens to some versions of OSX. What build are you running? And can you post a screen shot.

Hope it wasn't something bad for the mac

Can't imagine that I would have installed anything harmful.

How can this be cyrillic? - îtîë$tøˇ€Äîùÿ@îë&–î묉

It seems more like a wrong formatted file name and the en/de-coding is wrong though. Hmm.

    Cyrillic character encoding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_8859-5
Character encoding for western Europe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO/IEC_8859-1

    CMD+SHIFT+1 or CMD+SHIFT+2 or CMD+SHIFT+3 or CMD+SHIFT+4.

CMD+SHIFT+4 let's you select the area you want shoot.

Then use Flickr or any other image hosting service and embed the image URL via the [IMG] button found on top of the text field when you make a post here.

But I don't think those commands work when you've started up from the installer DVD, do they?

Sorry, but now I'm a little bit lost.
Where was there talk about the Installer DVD?

And yes, those commands can not be used while booted from the Installation or Restore or Upgrade DVD.

So you selected the area by making a rectangle around whatever you wanna shoot (there are even the pixel width and height visible on the bottom right corner of the rectangle) . Then you let go and a file is saved to your Desktop, possibly called something like this:
    Screen shot 2010-02-14 at 3.46.05 AM.png

Or you use Applications / Utilities / Grab[/B] --> [IMG]
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/what-is-macosx/apps-and-utilities.html#grab

That file can be uploaded to Flickr and embedded here.
