Hi

i just finished setting up our new iMac M1 24. I find the screen to have more glare than our 2017 iMac 27 inch. Has anyone else found this to be the case?

Any suggestions for mitigating this?

Thanks in advance.

DetroitBorg talked about the refection in his video. It wasn't excessive for him but he noticed it. He did say that it wasn't as much as he thought it would be with a all glass front.

Outside of that one review, I haven't seen any complaints on here about it.

Less than my late-2015 5k iMac
Unpopular opinion though but I strongly prefer slightly glossy screens to matte. Matte screens look dull to me and remind me of the cheap screens of years past.

I agree absolutely with you,I find my photos have much more pop and contrast versus the matte screens and they also look artificial to my eyes.

Did they use a lower quality AR coating on the new machines? This would really damp my enthusiasm for them as I love how good the AR coating is on my 2015 5K iMac.

In my situation, I see absolutely no difference in reflectivity or glare between the 24-inch M1 and the 2015 27-inch. When either was powered down, it's a bit like a dark mirror, but with them powered up, there's no reflection to see.

At present, I have the 27-inch set up on my workbench behind me, and I can't see it reflected in the 24-inch screen - or the other way around.

The problem here is that I think different people have different sensitivities to this, so the only way anyone would know for sure would be to actually use one. In a store with all the overhead and display lighting usually present, it shouldn't be hard to detect a problem if someone was going to see it at all.

Hi Robert

I wonder if my sense of increased glare has anything to do with the iMac 24 being lower than the 2017 27 inch and less wide?

The issue is that I face a window, which is behind the iMac. I think the iMac 24, might let more light in. Not sure.

That is a good thought (re: height). That, in addition to the placement of the screen in the room probably does make you more sensitive to any change, even if it may not more light per se. it makes you more acutely aware.

Other than that, I am amazed how responsive the M1 iMac is, even with 8GB of RAM. 512GB SSD.

Personally I have preferred a matt screen, which was one of the reasons I have gone for the Mac Mini in the past (2005 to present). I have been able to choose a monitor that suits me. The transportability of the Mini was also a a big factor.

However, in a different situation now, with transportability no longer being a requirement, the characteristics of the display has risen in importance. I reserved judgment until I was able to see the M1 iMac in a store. In recent days I have been able to check one out.....

It seems that, while the M1 iMac display is still glossy, to my eyes it does not seem as reflective as previous generations...... and the 4.5 K retina display is a huge improvement on the Full HD 24" matt monitor I am using now. I reckon what reflectivity the M1 iMac has could be managed by placement of the computer, and the room lighting. Sooner or later I will be making the transition to the iMac.

I've found it to have less glare than my 21.5'' and 27'' iMacs. It's possible the white borders and bezel are playing mind tricks to cut down on that glare, however.

I will be adding an anti-glare screen filter once they start hitting the market, makes a big difference in comfort.

Interior only lighting gives very little glare due to overhead.

When I open the door during the day to let the sunshine in, the 24" M1 has less glare / reflectivity than my 24" Apple Cinema Display.

This is what my setup looks like - the camera flash shows in the 24" M1 but the glare is more distinct with my 24" ACD.

Mine has less glare.

I was always able to see someone walking or driving by on the street in the edge of my 2011. now, while I do see the window blinds... it's much harder to see anything as far away as the street. If I catch a movement at all, the car has driven by before I get turned around!
