The new images of the PowerBook look amazing, although the form factor and shape are the same as before.

i agree. the photography is excellent.

I don't want to bitch about the screens, brighter is most certainly welcome. But I also wish the minimum setting could go lower. After working in the dark for a while "one bar" brightness on the screen is too bright IMHO... Though, I do have the "Old" 17" PB...

Again, I am not complaining that "Its too bright" but rather it something that would be nice...

Judging from the comparison shots the brightness and resolution look excellent! If you compare the size of the icons/text in the menu bar between the two, you can clearly see a huge difference in screen space. I could use more workspace on my PowerBook, but I am getting a Power Mac Quad w/ ACD 20-inch soon. :)

Congrats on your new 'Books! Have fun with them! :D

Wow, likewise. :) I would've gone for that setup if I had the physical space for such a beast.

I don't see how you can have more space in the 17" when the screen is the same size? Is it because it's at a higher resolution that everything is smaller, theoretically adding more space because everything is smaller?

Yes. Look at the 12" and 14" iBooks. The 14" has a larger screen but both the 12 and 14 inch have the same space availabe because the resolution is the same. Only, on the 14" everything is just bigger.

my BTO 15'' pb just went into the preparing shipping phase!!!! WAHOO! Now to wait for a good ram deal from crucial :)

New 15"

Well, I went the extra $$$ and bumped to the 15" updated Powerbook. I had bought a new 12" a week ago with my Education Discount and paid $1499 for the 12" with SuperDrive. I had wanted the 15" with SD but wasn't able to spend $2,099 on it. When they updated the Powerbook and dropped the price I was able to get everything I wanted for $1799 with Ed Discount. What a deal!

I got it home yesterday and fell in love all over again. Wow. The screen is awesome, and the new features are too. I appreciate them adding Optical In/Out for Audio as I do some recording. Getting all of this for $1799 is better than saving $300 and getting a 12" with much less on it. I have it hooked up to a 20" Cinema Display right now so I haven't used the screen to much, but from what i have seen I like.

I know some have been upset with the update, but I am not one of them. They added more features to the 15" and then dropped the price of it and the 17". That alone is a great update for me. I think it will be for others too.

so really there wasnt anything done to the 12" pb expect for not having the combo drive any more? not even a small upgrade to the screen?
nothing whatsoever?

I'd love to hear more about your 15" Powerbook as I'm planning to buy one as well. It'll be my first new Mac as all my previous Macs have been second-hand, old machines that take up a lot of space. I'm done with that geeky stuff and want something that I can work with wherever I want, even though it might be just moving it from one room to another ;)

Anyway, I agree with you -although a lot of people seem to be whining about the updated Powerbook I see it the same way as you do: you get more for less :D

I have a couple of questions about your new Powerbook:
a) is the hard-drive noisy? Having a silent computer is important for me.
Anyone know if there's any noise-level difference between a 5400 and 7200 RPM drive?
I'm going to buy an external drive of some kind in any case for video and audio use, so the internal drive will just be for "regular use" (word-processing, email etc.)

b) If it's not too much trouble, can you check (with the "system profiler"?) what model/brand the hard drive is?
I'm also interested in finding out what kind of "Superdrive" is used as I want to check if there's a firmware update available that'll make it DVD region-free.

c) Any idea if the 15" Powerbook can be upgraded to 1.5 Gbytes?
That way I could buy a single 1 GB memory-module, and later buy another 1 GB module without scrapping anything but the 512 Mbyte memory-module that's included with the computer anyway.

I'm also curious about the 7200rpm drive noise. my thinkpad (it's work-issue, people) makes terrible whining and screeching noises that can be VERY annoying when you've finally got the apartment empty and all the TVs turned off... i wind up turning on the dryer just to give me white noise. If I'm going to spend $3k on a laptop it had better not emit skull-piercing noises...
