Is anyone going from an iPhone X to an iPhone XR when available?
I currently have iPhone X 64GB but the storage space is too low for me, been debating either getting a cheaper X at 256GB or XS at 256GB on the apple upgrade programme
However now debating getting 128GB in the XR format - I won’t make my decision until I can go in store and have a look at it, or there are some hands on videos knocking about
If you like the X size and screen, then get the XS 256.
However, if you're fine with the iPhone 8 screen, you'll be fine with the XR screen, since they are effectively the same aside from the size.
I see no reason to upgrade. I'm more partial to a LCD screen, but I'd rather not lose that second camera. What does the XR do that the X cannot and do those differences make it worthwhile?
The XR is a shrunken version of the XS Max with cheaper parts and a missing telephoto lens. It is NOT in the same size class as the X and XS. Both the XR and Max are 414 point wide 19.5:9 phones, and thus have 22% more screen space than the X and XS which are 375 point wide 19.5:9 phones.
The XR is 414x2 = 828 pixels wide.
The Max is 414x3 = 1242 pixels wide.
The X/XS is 375x3 = 1125 pixels wide.
Both the XR and Max support the extended landscape view mode, but the X/XS does not. Both the XR and Max support Zoomed Display mode, but the X/XS does not.
BTW, the iPhone 8 is a 375 point wide phone as well, and the iPhone 8 Plus is a 414 point wide phone. However, both those phones are considerably shorter vertically for screen size compared to the 2018 models obviously.
Most Youtube commentators do not think it worth the $749 price because of the 326ppi. But I think it still okay myself. I had an X and went with a pre-order Silver Xs Max 256GB. I think it will be hard to go back to a LCD screen after using an OLED however but I could be wrong.
Yes, many YouTube commentators are pushing the XS and Max because of OLED, but many tech sites are favouring the XR due to overall value and because they think 326 ppi is good enough for most people. Both are valid perspectives.
The OLED screen is superior to the 326 ppi XR screen, but as the tech sites point out, if you're fine with an iPhone 8's screen, then you'll be fine with the XR's screen, because they are the same technology with the same pixel density. Someone with decent eyesight and who knows what to look for can see benefits to OLED though, including for text clarity. OTOH, bright environment usage, I think I prefer the 401 ppi Plus screen over OLED. The OLED would win in dark environment usage though. Note that the OLED isn't really 458 ppi, since the Pentile Matrix is missing a whole bunch of blue and red subpixels.
The XR is supposed to have longer battery life than the X, but I could be wrong. Depends on the usage. You’d be giving up OLED and the dual lens camera. The XR is supposed to have portrait mode with the single lens but none of us know the quality of that. XR has no 3D Touch. XR has something similar but it’s not the same. The X is cheaper than the XR for the time being. Just saw one on Swappa for $600 in good condition. It’s not even a year old yet and the value has plummeted... jeez.
Also depends if you want a bigger phone and what size works for you. I can text with one hand using the X but anything bigger won’t work out. Going from the X to the Xs isn’t worth it either, at least to me.
According to Apple, the XR has the best battery life, and the Max has the second best. The XS is the worst of the three.
