I am very excited to see how my 3 year old son reacts to the iPad when I get it, but it will have a screen protector and case on it. He will also only be using it under my supervision. Some people seem to get their $500+ iPads out of the box, hand them straight to their kids, and let them run wild.

I still maintain that iPads are great for kids UNDER SUPERVISION. My kid would make mincemeat out of my iPad if allowed to run wild with it.

Just a neoprene sleeve on my iPad 2.

I understand the need for more substantial protection if you have little kids, but if not, I can't understand why anyone would keep such a beautiful, thin device covered all the time.

Think of it as a tribute to Jonny Ive to leave it uncovered.

I just got my iPad installed with Ghost Armor. Looks fantastic and I've always used them with any of my electronics in the past. If your based out of Arizona, I highly recommend checking there cart at Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. Now Just waiting for my Switcheasy Canvas case!

Nothing on my screen, but I have a couple of cases and a crappy smart cover which I use when I leave the house with the iPad. I have the BookBook, a folio case and a leather envelope-type case which I bought for iPad 1. I choose different combinations depending on where I'm going. I refuse to buy a dozen different cases for iPad 2, I did that for the first one and now am stuck with them.

My $0.02

I don't have kids, so around the house I use the InCase perforated snap case. Really light and thin... The little holes let you see through and it adds a little grip too.

When I'm on the go, I use the InCase magazine case. Also light and thin (though not as light as the snap case) and it is the folio cover so I don't worry about it in my bag.

I have iPad 1... Pretty durable and with these cases, I've managed to keep it scratch free should I ever pass it along to a new owner.

UPDATE: Since I didn't really answer your question and just posted a bunch of blather, I'll simply answer the question now. Yes. I think you're fine without a case when you're not on the go. Just don't set it down on a table full of crumbs, salt, sugar, etc.
