I've read a tonne of threads, and don't know if I'm getting caught up on specs .

I've a 2019 MacBook Pro 13" i7 1.7ghz 16GB ram 256GB . I'm considering paying to change to a MacBook Air 13" M2 8GB Ram 512GB

I'd like to hear real world examples of anyone who has done similar, and if it was a good choice for them . Am I going to miss the 16GB Ram?

I do a bit of hobby DJ'ing (DJAY PRO) , normal office apps , light photo, light video editing (family and drone stuff) . Iv'e been doing some of the drone video editing on a M1 iPad Pro . Have dabbled with davinci resolve , but nothing too heavy .

Anyone have a similar use case, and are they getting on with an Air rather than a pro ?

There is no 14" Air for starters. I would not buy a new computer with 8GB of RAM. I have 16 in my Air and it's comfortable. My wife has 8GB in her mini and it gets bogged down way easier. Multiple users signed on is completely out.

Edited for typo on screen size.
Thanks

I won’t be using multiple users.
Have you gone from a similar spec’d / age MacBook Pro to an air ?

I have an M1 Air with 8GB of RAM and I'm always surprised at how much I can get away with. I actually run multiple users on it, and while it gets a little laggy when switching, it recovers and then seems to do fine. I use it for Illustrator and InDesign a fair bit and it's fine.

I think an 8GB MacBook Air is definitely usable for a lot today and I bet you could get by with the stuff you're working on. But thinking ahead three or four years when macOS Ojai or whatever is out and your 8GB Air is starting to lag, you'll wish you could go back and spend that $200 on more RAM.

It of course depends on how OP will use it. Recently went from an 8GB Pro to a new 8GB M1 Air because I never had issues with 8GB. Even with large 60 page word documents with graphs from Excel, diagrams, photos etc, video editing in FCPX and music production in Garageband 8GB was fine. On the M1 it feels faster.

It will do what you're asking of it just fine, the issue will be longevity down the road. As they continue to add more features to the os, the more resources it will use. So I think it boils down to how long you plan to keep this for as well. Storage you can buy external ssd's to store footage on, ram is soldered on and you're stuck with whatever you choose for the life of this Mac.
