Crack.

Okay, maybe that's not healthy. But still.

For breakfast?

I remember - oh, some few decades ago - while I myself was still a student, being present at a production of Romberg's operetta 'The Student Prince' which was actually performed in the grounds of Heidelberg Castle and one of the characters - as it happened, the Prince, naturally enough - cried out, during one of his early scenes: "Champagne! Champagne for breakfast!" waving a bottle around with merry abandon…….

While I think it was intended to demonstrate his playful character, at the time, I thought it a characteristically decadent thing for an aristocratic wastrel to want to do.

I'd prefer to keep my teeth, so I'll forego the crack. How about a bit of champagne and reefer instead?

I have been eating a bowl of oatmeal, a slice of dry wheat toast and a glass of water for over a decade. I'm 51 years old, no medications, no medical problems, no allergies, I weigh 140 pounds, and my blood pressure is 112 over 78.

* water with every meal
* meals are no larger than my fist
* diet consists mostly of fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts
* the only meats I eat are salmon, cod, tuna, beef, chicken, or turkey
* eat only when hungry and go to bed hungry
* avoid eating to the point of being "full"

I weighed 275 pounds twenty years ago, but lost much of that after adopting this diet. My doctor tells me that my excellent health at my age is mostly due to my eating habits.

Wow! Good for you! *insert impressed smiley*

Eat in Moderation

Ive tried multiple diets and the best one is to eat in MODERATION. Or just make sure to always swap out for healthier options. If you want to make a spaghetti, just swap out white pasta for whole grain, use turkey meat for beef.... Instead of regular yogurt, eat greek yogurt. Drink soy milk/almond milk, non fat milk over whole milk. Eat oatmeal instead of pb&j sandwiches in the morning. There are so many different ways you can enjoy your meals and lose weight by cutting out unnecessary calories! If you go on a diet, you are depriving yourself of good nutrients and your meals are completely boring! Remember, you want to have a diet that can last a life time. Eat in moderation and eat more veggies!

One thing we must keep ion mind, something I learned while losing weight.

If you change your diet in order to lose weight, then return to your old eating habits once your target weight is attained, you'll eventually go back to your old weight because the old eating habits were the cause of the old weight. This is why people go on a diet, lose weight, go back to their old eating habits and think the diet failed when they gain the weight back. The diet didn't fail, their body is doing exactly what they told it to do.

If you want to lose weight for life, then you'll need to change your diet for life.. so it's best to find a diet that you will be happy with for life.

I'm going to have to try this! Big salad fan here, this sounds quite tasty :)

I'm glad I came across this thread. I decided yesterday that it's high time I lose some weight. I'm sure the major reason why I've gotten a little round in the midsection is due to the fact that my eating habits have become terrible as of late. My diet has mostly centered around eating fast food more often than not, eating too many candy bars, grazing constantly during the weekends, and drinking far more coke than I should.

I've gotten way too lazy and sloppy as of late, and I want (and need) to do something to reverse it. Just yesterday, I found myself getting winded over something I used to be able to do not even two years ago without even breaking a sweat. That's kinda scary.

I'm planning on losing at least 30 pounds, and I want to build back some of the muscle mass I've lost over the last decade. Preferably, I'd like to get back into the same shape I was right after high school, but getting near that would be nice enough. Eating right would be a great first step. I've already converted my soft drink stores to seltzer water (which I love for some reason). Next up would be nixing the candy bars, and the greasier fast food joints. Instead going with soups, sandwiches, and whatnot.

So post some recipes, folks! I'll read 'em, and I'll eat 'em! :D

Actually, I think part of the long term issues with dieting is that dieting is not often seen as eating better, but of denying yourself, or cutting out, the unhealthy stuff that happens to be tasty.

Thus, dieting is frequently - especially for women - mingled and mixed with the notion of deprivation or self-punishment or denial, and ending the diet can mean granting oneself some sort of permission to resume old ways and tuck into old favourites.

Therefore, the trick is either to eat less of the tasty (but possibly unhealthy stuff), rather than cutting it out entirely, and also to find food, healthy food, that is, that actually tastes good enough so that you'll want to eat it.

Munching something horrible and healthy, just because it is wholesome, will not serve as sufficient enticement to remain with that particular food, not unless it actually tastes good.

Too many diets focus on the possible health benefits, rather than the taste of what you are eating; people will suffer and endure it for a while, but not longterm. Thus, the tone is often focussed on high-minded improvement, rather than the sheer gluttonous joy of eating a good meal.

Now, this can be especially the case when one is living in a stressful environment that one cannot readily evade or escape from. Comfort eating is one of the ways one can indulge oneself and still remain functional, which is a must for, say, carers. You will not remain functional if your addiction of choice is crack cocaine, or heroin, or excessive alcohol abuse.

This is one of the reasons why over-eating has become the addiction of women, who must remain functional and who do not have the luxury of of the sort of self-destruction where they can destroy themselves utterly, not when others are utterly dependent on them.

Back on topic, preparing food from scratch, and cooking it from scratch, - good quality, preferably organic food - will still allow you to use things like butter and olive oil, yet still control what goes into the pot or pan (i,e. no additives or strange chemicals….)

I never buy ready made meals; when I cook, I cook from scratch, and some of my standby recipes take only half an hour to put together.

That's awesome Renzatic! I wish you all the best and if I can help out in any way then let me know. The simple eating plan I follow has worked for me. I lost over 100lbs total and have kept it off for over two years now. I can PM you the details if you want.

I'm a boring dude so I eat the same things for breakfast every day. Four boiled egg whites, grits, 6oz water and 6oz of milk.

I run at lunch so I eat at my desk a lot so usually a protein shake and salad or sandwich.

Day 2 of my little diet. I've been counting calories like a mofo, and probably aren't getting anywhere near enough, but damn if I don't feel better.

Yesterday I consumed about 800 calories. For starters, I made a breakfast that consisted of an egg white omelet cooked with small strips of low fat steak and onions, then topped with black olives, spinach leaves, and sandwiched between two wheat buns, and seasoned with pepper and oregano. It was delicious, and was the only thing I ate all day until 10 last night, when I suddenly had this huge craving for something sweet. So I ate a couple of cookies, and downed them with some skim milk.

Today, I probably consumed around 1100 cals. I started my day with the exact same thing for breakfast, drank a good bit of water throughout the day, then finished it off with take-out steamed broccoli and chicken with a side of equally steamed white rice for dinner when I got home.

I'm not exactly sure how healthy I'm eating, but one thing I've noticed is that, after just two days, I feel so much better after a meal. Not overly stuffed, but satisfied. I think this might be due to the fact that I've been eating far too much greasy food. No random gas station candy bars and cokes, either.

One thing I think needs to be changed is that I do need to eat something between breakfast and dinner. Going around 10 hours without eating anything probably isn't doing me too many favors. I also need to exercise more. Eating well is only half the equation, so I'll be breaking out the bike and doing more jogging here soon.

So over the past few years I've lost quite a bit of weight through diet and exercise, 6 stone (84lbs) to be exact.

The thing is I want to lose another stone but I'm just so sick of the meals I normally eat when dieting that it's making it really hard. My main meal at the end of the day is ok, but breakfast and lunches are super boring. I've watched some YouTube videos on meal ideas but half of them use ingredients barley any average person has or the prep time is out of this world.

So does anyone have any suggestions that might make my life a little bit easier? I'm not a fussy eater at all.

Thanks!
I throw frozen chicken breasts in the oven on 375F for about 20 minutes, then remove and turn the oven to broil. While it's heating up I brush some olive oil on both sides and sprinkle with some seasoning ( currently using J&Ds Bacon Rub ). Actually, I more or less pour and rub as much as I can get into the breast. Then 4 or 5 minutes each side of top rack broil. Take the chicken out and cut it up. Put it in a reusable bowl with a ton of spinach, fresh chopped tomatoes, a couple of of tablespoons of mozzarella and finally pour an ample amount of homemade balsamic vinaigrette over the top. Pop it in the fridge, when you get to work, through it in the microwave for a couple of minutes and you've got something loaded with protein and fairly healthy.

Good luck.

I usually cook everything Chinese-style, meaning that it can be prepared in less than 10 minutes. It also tastes friggin' good.

Really, the problem with dieting is that people have no idea what to eat, and soon it becomes boring. If you look into food from a completely different region of the world it soon becomes apparent to you that there are so many ways to prepare the same old ingredients in your fridge, and it doesn't have to be complicated at all.

Excellent post and very well made point. Cuisines from other parts of the world can often offer huge - yet healthy - variety to one's diet.

Anyone got any good ideas for healthy breakfasts and lunches?

Eat things in moderation is generally the way to being healthier. Be active. Cut out soda, even diet (which can be worse). Get a good amount of protein in while getting some complex carbs and healthy fats. Counting calories is ok but really you don't have to be a bean counter to see benefits quickly. Losing weight isn't optimal if you're not doing it in a healthy way. In general a pound of fat is around 3500 calories. It's why people say to shave around 500 calories a day. It'd be about a pound a week. I used to drink soda, once I stopped I swore I dropped 15 pounds easily. 3-4 a day is about 600-900 I cut out.

Staying active is key imo. And switching up exercises

I am a big fan of amazing eggs and just found my new egg supplier. These eggs are amazing
