I'm thinking of just leaving Apple Watch connected with my PM and just use the Air with sim plan. Watch will still sync to PM.
For some reason when I moved everything over from pro max to air it connected my apple watch away from pro max lol

My plan is to use hotspot for my other SIM when I need to use air. I had 5 sims lol so planning to stick with just 2 now

I bought the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Loved them both but ended up returning the Pro Max. I just felt that after getting all the bigger iPhones in the past I'd try something different which the Air indeed is. As I say I love the Air but also loved the PM and now miss it.

Am seriously thinking of reordering the Pro Max and using both, then keeping the Air as a "burner phone" when it comes to July/August 2026 and the iPhone 18's will be due in September. Then I'll sell the PM for maximum price.

Anyway, is this a crazy idea or is there anyone else who has bought both or are considering doing so?
If you like both and can afford both, go for it. YOLO.

I use my Air during the week for work. I like being able to stick it in my pocket and it doesn't pull my pants down and it has the bigger screen for emails and such. Use my Pro on the weekends when I want to take more photos and not worry too much about battery because I'm doom scrolling and playing games more.

Do you just switch the eSim over? What about Apple Watch? Do you sync that also or just leave it connected to one phone?

I think I’m just a simple person with phones, I’m still very happy with the air and don’t even really think about what it can’t do.. it honestly blows me away and my wife has the 17 pro and we both just use them.. we don’t really see much difference, we both just take pictures etc. I really like them both but I love my air knowing it is titanium and glass, her phone has a very strong case so I never actually see it but it is a nice case to look at too. I just use a cheap jtech case but I can’t find a better one for my needs, it covers the important parts and is incredibly thin so why care?

I'm a difficult case because I love minimal phones but I also love being able to take a high fidelity picture or video spontaneously. The two are at odds and can't exist in one device.

So I got an Air and intend to get a slim dedicated camera to carry around in a jacket pocket or cross body fanny pack, but the selection for dedicated cameras is abysmal. Crazy enough, the camera that most satisfies my checklist of wants might be a 17 Pro, so I'm thinking about getting one to use as a dedicated camera, leaving it unactivated. I would bring it with me whenever I wear a jacket (only a couple cool months out of the year where I am) or a cross body (probably most days for the rest of the year).

One might ask if I'm carrying the 17P anyway then why not just activate it and leave my Air at home--and if I'm doing that often enough then why even have the Air. It's because for me, I never want to use anything bulkier than the Air as a phone again. Unlike a camera, I use my phone a million times per day and it's always on me, so I want it to disappear into my pants pocket where I can quickly take it out and put it back in. I tried a 16PM in a cross body bag for a year, and while wearing the bag was annoying only occasionally, having to unzip and zip the bag a million times per day was constantly annoying. A 17P would be better than the 16PM in my pants pocket, but not nearly good enough, not like the Air, so it would need to go in a cross body too. But for a camera that I use only occasionally (and spontaneously), that's perfectly fine. And of course there will be days I don't want to bother with the bag and camera so I can leave them behind and still have my slim phone in my pocket.

I'll likely keep the Air indefinitely (the only upgrade I really wish for is DisplayPort so I can use my XR glasses but we'll see if it's added), and if I get the Pro I would upgrade it only when there are major camera advancements, particularly in zoom.

it's a crazy idea. Why you need 2 phones ? What is the matter with you ? it's only a phone. just get one use it for a couple of years and then get the next one.

Nice thing about the Air is that you can now buy it on the grey market for about two thirds of the original price as retailers can’t shift them.

Might go down as the fastest iPhone to lose its resale value in history. Great if you want to pick one up now though.

Nothing coming up near me yet, retailers not dropping price either. AU.

What is the grey market? I don't see any sales. Got a link?

It's not a crazy idea for us phone nerds. I have 3 of the 4 from the 16 lineup. I have both the air and the 17PM. The air for personal. The pro max for work that I just received. And I am so impressed with the Pro that I'm thinking of getting one for personal use with my 16 Plus as a trade-in. The speaker sound just about blew me away after 3 months with the air, I mean let's face it, it's adequate but nothing like the Pro. The aluminum frame is a lot lighter than I thought, feels really comfortable in the hand compared to the 15/16 Pro Maxes. Yes there's a difference in the weight of the air, but not to the point where that should be the only reason to get it. So I don't know, I don't think I can wait until next September for the 18's, that's like an eternity from now. And if the Fold really is going to come out at the same time and there's a delay, it could affect the whole fall release.

Switched over to the Air but only for 24 hours. The biggest pain is Apple Watch. It's not just fitness that syncs but also sleep apps, WhatsApp (although that's quite easy to switch over) etc. I'd say out of the two the Pro Max would be the one I'd miss most. The Air is an incredible phone though.

I know, I know, third world problems....🤣

Not following why the Apple Watch was a pain point in only using the iPhone Air 24 hours.

Well, I was going to use the Air for a few days and thought all other stats (Sleep etc) would just sync to the 17PM but then didn't. So, so for instance I was using the Air and left the PM at home I don't think it'd record any fitness via my Apple Watch? I mean, do they have to be in range? Not sure...

I've noticed Health data syncs sporadically. It will sync eventually but it's not in real-time.
