I'm totally serious. Because the buyer said the problem was that the item hadn't arrived, the only thing they'd accept is a tracking number. I guess it massively cuts down on their paperwork/need for a legal team; fulfil the criteria or go away.

I even recorded all my phone conversations with PayPal if you're that interested!!

Take a look at www.paypalsucks.com and you'll see many more similar stories.

Oh, I can believe the paypal story, I can't believe the guy emailed you to ask about TV!

Oh right! Yeah, he couldn't get it to re-tune to his area, so I kindly helped him out.

And he left positive feedback (which of course made me do the same, which meant he could continue with his scam and it'd leave no mark on his eBay account).

At least I learnt my lesson. Shame it cost me £600.

What? If someone leaves you positive feedback you can't leave negative feedback? Did something change with the ebay that I missed?

I tried to buy a crash cymbal a few years ago from a guy on eBay. He only had a 65% positive rating, which was something I neglected to notice until after I had won. The cymbal didn't come and didn't come for weeks on end, but we were exchanging emails the entire time. I finally filed a complaint with PayPal 29 days later, and they ruled in my favor.

He posted negative feedback on my page saying I'd gotten the cymbal and filed the complaint to get my money back, but then posted a retraction a few days later saying the cymbal had been returned to him with "return to sender" written on it.

I suppose I didn't really get "scammed," but the guy seemed flakey from the start.

What I meant is that he left positive feedback, I reciprocated and then, once it was all 'finished', he contacted PayPal to say that the TV hadn't arrived.

He's still on eBay (but blocked from bidding on my items!), probably doing the same to loads of people and still has 100% positive feedback.

you can reply on his feedback. http://pages.ebay.co.uk/services/forum/feedback.html

but it wont change any of his rating but a place for you to rant and hopefully people will see it

I sold a TV for collection only. The guy paid by PayPal (safe, I thought) and collected it.

About a month later he lodged a complaint saying the item had not arrived - at which point PayPal took back the £600 from my bank account. PayPal told me to produce a postal tracking number but, when I explained he collected it, they decided in his favour and gave him the £600.

eBay and PayPal assisted the guy in stealing my TV. I invited him into my home and allowed him to steal from me.

eBay weren't interested, PayPal couldn't care less and the Police said there was nothing they could do.

And to add insult to injury, I still had to pay the eBay fees and final value fee.

Bastards.

Any item picked up locally from me, must be paid in cash for the reason you've stated. Ebay and Papal care about one thing and that's profit.

I am in the process of trying to get 900.00 refunded for a Adobe Master Suite. Guy printed a shipping label & Never sent the item. It's been 3 weeks+ now & I reported it to PayPal and they started an investigation. I contacted the FBI also as it's wire fraud & A felony, Luckily, I Paid with PayPal & through my business Credit card, so I am confident it will sort out.

Paypal will only refund $200 max (unless the seller can meet extra criteria) and you will receive an email from Paypal that states they are working hard to secure the rest of your money. You're better off to dispute the amount with your credit card company, this will keep you from disputing the tranaction twice (once with Paypal and again with CC).

I've done over 100 transactions on eBay and just got burned two weeks ago. I sold a DVD and the seller emailed me before the auction ended and asked if I did delivery confirmation. I replied no, he bought it and put that he was fine with not having delivery confirmation on the Paypal transaction notes. 3 weeks later I get a complaint through paypal from him in broken english stating that he never received the DVD. Fine, so I email him and ask why he didn't email me first. No response. I had the receipt from the Post Office in my hand showing it had been shipped. I emailed paypal and they told me I couldn't do anything, I needed a tracking number/delivery confirmation. So they took the 15 dollars back out of my account and took it out of my bank account to cover. I will never deal with paypal again. I just need something better come out soon and I'll switch ASAP, I hate Paypal.

This is correct and is one of Paypal's rules. Also, anything over $250 must have signature confirmation, if not, you're hit and will loose your item and money under a Paypal dispute. Any Paypal item less than $250 must have delivery confirmation and have neen sent in a timely fashion. The scammers know all the rules and everyone else should also. Good luck.

I'd say the worst situation I've ever incurred on eBay was a used APC battery backup I purchased. I got the thing and basically, all it did was BEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEP. I contacted the seller and they wanted me to pay for return shipping (bear in mind this was one of those Smart UPS 1000 things, weighs a ton). For me to pay return shipping would have costed a ton, and it just wasn't worth it. I wanted them to pay for it, because they sent me a piece of junk, and they flat out refused. I ended up filing a claim with eBay which took months, and in the end only got part of my money back. Some things just aren't worth buying on eBay I guess.

In the past seven or eight years that I've been buying/selling on there, the most important things I've learned are:

  • Always look at their feedback profile
  • Always always always check shipping costs...one thing you'll find a lot of on eBay is people selling a product dirt-cheap, hoping that buyers won't notice their exorbitant shipping prices
  • Never buy unless they offer a form of payment that offers you some kind of guarantee. I try to use Paypal and when I do, make sure the seller is using a confirmed address (otherwise if you have a problem, Paypal/eBay isn't held accountable)

i have to say i only shop at ebay if:

-the seller has more positive ratings than the item costs in dollars
-the item is so cheap that i can afford to lose all of the money
-the item is not a standard item like a macbook that attracts too many scammers
-the offer has a reasonable description with pics and all
-i can pay with paypal (i might lose money but keep my credit card info)
-the seller is a reputable ebay shop (those rarely get hacked without somebody noticing it immediately)

all that limits my ebay shopping to less than "$500" items. haven't been scammed yet but most stuff i buy is $20-$50 and i could take that loss if it happens.

i wonder how much business ebay loses due to people not trusting the site anymore.

I believe ebay has lost a substantial amount of business and ebayers. I was just involved in another ebay scam (fraud) on an macbook I recently purchased and will receive all my money back from my credit card dispute for an item not received. I also received an ebay voucher for $300 (this was more than I Paid for the ebay item) to spend on ebay for being scammed. I was quite amazed to receive this voucher and had not received any vouchers for the previous scams that were pulled on me. I believe ebay's giving vouchers to restore confidence in the ebay marketplace and I believe it needs it badly.

I have been on ebay since Jan 99 and have not been scammed until the last couple of years and now I have been scammed about 10 times on higher priced electronics. I have not lost any money buying items on ebay due to using my credit card and successfully filing a credit card charge back. Paypal was useless, and would only refund $200 and then PayPal would send me an email stating "they were working hard to retrieve the rest of my money" (yeah right).

Wish you all the best of luck, and am praying you recover your funds, as 1300 is a lot to lose..

Just called him and have this voicemail, 'I'm sorry, this is Orange Answerphone'...I am considering putting his name here. What's the legal implication of asking help from the internet to help find out more about this guy??? This gonna be exciting once I post his name here.

have you tried reverse phone lookup? To see if hes giving you his real name?

No problems at all. All eBay usernames are available for public viewing anyway. Google 'Xbox - Wow You're a Moron!' - online users are great at digging when there's thousands of them.

Go on - do it - you know you want to :D

Do it quickly SOM bro, we can research about this ...
I know this is probably against your wishes but seems vest

but i highly suggest that you find two large guys who are well built and armed who are willing to escort you to the guys place to pick up your laptop. do not be afraid. you have every right to demand your property which you have paid for.

Oh my god - we're actually going to be the new Kings of Digg if we all solve this mystery! Hurrah! :D

I have his REAL name!!! I suspect he hijacks an ebay account to sell the stuff. I have managed to got a reply from a buyer who managed to bid for the other laptop that this guy sells and he said he will not transfer any money to the seller unless I update him on whether I receive the laptop. I saved one person :D. I will check with my housemate later because he has helped me to buy the laptop and we have sent a message to EBAY about this suspicious hijacked account to see whether they are doing anything or not yesterday.

INTERNET ARMY, ARE YOU READY?

Just be careful about naming and shaming in public.

If he/she has highjacked an account you run the risk of defaming an innocent person — or worse if you start a witch-hunt.

Just a thought. :(
