I have the 27” Apple LED Cinema Display (not to be confused with the 27” Thunderbolt Display), and I’m thinking about getting an M1 Mac Mini.

I’ve recently read that it may not work. Apparently a lot of people have issues running it on that computer. From what I’ve read it seems to be dependent on the adapter that is used.

Is there anyone with the same display and an M1 Mini who can tell me if they got it running? Thanks.

I have been using one successfully, but only after a fair bit of trial and error. For me, the cheap USB-C to Mini-Displayport adaptors (from MonoPrice, etc.) had all sorts of issues waking from sleep, etc. They would only work about 60-70% of the time.

What worked for me was using a powered hub/dock. I have been using the CalDigit SOHO Dock for the last 8 months, and since using it, have not experienced any issues with waking from sleep. It has a full-sized DisplayPort, so I also needed a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adapter. I used a generic 6-inch "Cable Matters" branded one from Amazon.

As an aside, the brightness controls and webcam on the monitor will only work if you plug the USB into the one full-sized USB port on the dock.

I've never had a problem with the in-line adapters.

I used the M1 Mini with the 27" Cinema display for about a week before finding a Thunderbolt display. It seemed to work fine by using a TB3 > DisplayPort adaptor plugged into a DisplayPort > MiniDisplayPort adaptor. USB, Microphone, speakers and camera all worked OK. Did not have an adaptor for the Firewire. The 27" Cinema seems to wake more quickly than the Thunderbolt Display.
