Hi,

Like many i installed lion recently. But about half the time i try to shut down and half the time i try to boot up, it just freezes. The shut down freezes to a white screen and the boot freezes at the login window with the rainbow wheel.
Anyone else experienced this and solved it?

Similar Experience - Heat, too

Similar experience with inconsistent circumstances. Have had two lock ups on shut down, lock up and infinite spinning beach ball on attempted restart, had to force hard shut down each time to recover. Tried to restart and fans came on at full throttle, then I noticed that the underbelly of my MBP was very hot. After things cooled down overnight, was able to restart.
Had a lock up yesterday morning with several Safari windows open, a few other apps and finder window; seemed pretty benign; did three-finger swipe for Mission Control and the system locked up.

Scared me into going back to my backup clone that has the latest SL. Searched around for threads with similar problem all afternoon. There are others having similar lock ups. Pre-Lion install recommendation was to use Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions. Gave that a shot and decided to try installing Lion again.

For good measure, performed Repair Disk Permissions after fresh install. I'll caveat that I'm not convinced that was the problem or fix, but Lion working fine for now, and I was able to shutdown last night without problems.

Have RARELY had the system lock up with SL any other circumstances. Now I'm a little terrified each time I power up or down. I want Lion to work, but am not thrilled so far.

Lion shut down time

It takes my 27" iMac between 4 and 5 minutes to shut down. Suggestions anyone?

i have found that Firefox sometimes hangs up my shutdowns (Firefox also has some issues with Resume). Other than that, no issues shutting down.
Perhaps you have some other programs running that are having the same problem that i have with Firefox?

White screen experience

Although I don't have numbers I am sure Lion takes longer to boot up than SL did. I have a 27" intel iMac and experienced this white screen issue once. Sequence as follows"

1) System locked up on plugging in a portable HD (FAT32)
2) Regular restart from the menu gave me white screen for several minutes.
3) Pulled plug and start again with button failed twice.
4) Pulled plug for about 15 minutes and started. Boot up successful but took way longer than normal (even for Lion). White screen initially was plain, no logo or wheel, for several minutes before moving into a normal boot screen.

As mentioned in another post I think this may be a heat or fan issue. I have iStat Pro widget but unfortunately had no reason to look at it prior. I will be looking more often now. I am presently Ambient 79F and CPU 119F. I also have a small AC fan that blows on my external drives and the back of the machine. The fan does keep the drives cool but the air slot on the iMac is so small that I doubt it has much effect.

If it is a heat issue it is kind of scary as it could do real damage to data. I think the full version of iStat can keep fans running full speed but then maybe fan life will shorten causing an even worse problem.

have you tried unchecking 'reopen windows when logging back in" at shutdown? disabling that has greatly improved shut-down and startup times for me

shut down issues i7 27"iMac

I tried removing all "Login Items" that were scheduled to auto open, when logging in to the admin user acct. Seemed to shut down on command with out hesitation after that. (The problems didn't start until after I modified the auto shutdown and start up function of the energy preferences....go figure. ) Working fine now.

I hadn't had an issue until, literally, just now. I was trying to log out to test something and it hung while quitting Finder. The system had quit it (I was able to open Activity Monitor and check) but it was still showing in the dock and menubar. I could Spotlight search but not open anything. I had to force shutdown. All is well now but it was a strange issue.

I'm really considering doing a clean Lion install.
