I just bought my series 3 LTE watch to use on my AT&T service. The phone calling feature works great. My phone rings and so does my watch. My phone is no where near my watch and my watch rings when someone calls me. However, I can't manage to send or receive text messages on my watch when it's away from my iPhone. The watch will act like it's sending a regular text message but it then eventually fails.

It's my understanding iMessages work as advertised without any hitches on the series 3 watch. So am I asking for too much to get the same from my watch for being able to send and receive regular text messages?

Mine seemed to fail at first too. I walked a few blocks from the house. Finally got iMessages to go through, and then texts started working. I think the phone needs to be on and connected via WIFI or cellular for this to work--even if the phone is miles away at home. Something to do with the forwarding process.

Well, I do know the phone needs to be powered in order for regular text messages to work on the watch when the two are apart from each other. Been there and tried that too... The watch isn't able to send or receive text messages from my iPhone. iMessage and calls work fine, but regular SMS messages don't.

Just walked out to test again since hadn't used texts in awhile. Takes quite a while for the first one to send (had 3 dot signal out of 4). Then, all texts send and receive in normal time. Not sure how often this re-learning has to happen. Also tested phone, maps, weather, USA Today, Fox News, etc. and they all pull up their little screens quickly. Have yet to wait out Facebook messenger though. It never seems to load.

The cellular strength green dots are available on the Explorer Watch Face. You can also swipe up to the watch's Control center to see the connectivity in the top left of the screen. Green dots for cellular, Blue waves for Wi-Fi, Green rectangle outline for Bluetooth connection to iPhone.

Check out this website - great write-up on the scenarios in regards to phone status and what works/does not work:

I love my new watch but this whole LTE issue is really annoying me. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm pretty sure I'm going to ditch the LTE service for now and save myself $10/month.

I just activated my series 3 Hermes yesterday on Att and it's working fine. Sends and receives both iMessages and SMS just fine.

It seems that you don't need LTE then, you just like to try out a new toy.

LTE is invaluable to me. $10/month is well worth it.
