I ran across this product called SageTV. Has anyone heard of it? If anyone has tried it, how does it compare to the AppleTV? My family is really looking for something that can act as a TiVo that doesn't have a monthly fee attached to it.

I don't know much about this product, but from the link, it seems to need a separate computer for it to act as a DVR. Doesn't look like it has an antenna input.

I've used Sage extensively in the last couple years (haven't for awhile though). They had come out with a little box (similar to ATV) that could handle HD from your server (running SageTV) and also could playback live or recorded video from the server or backend (assuming it has tuners. I'm sure they have never versions by now. It was a very slick and very customizable system. I really liked being able to integrate my OTA tuner live and recorded TV with my archived TV and movies (of various formats). In the end I didn't stick with Sage only because cable in my area sucks and my satellite system didn't integrate with Sage the way I wanted.

Anyway, it really is a great piece of software, and the set top box that they sold was very impressive. It does take some setup and is not quite as easy as ATV. If most of your content comes from the iTunes store, get an ATV by all means. If you have all kinds of movies and TV shows from places other than iTunes and of many different formats that aren't ATV compatible (like I do) and might also like to integrate Tivo-like function for your OTA or Cable into one box, check out Sage.

I have also used SageTV for numerous years. It is hands down the best media center software and hardware combo. However, its not without its minuses. I switched over to TIVO and Appletv for all my needs, because of frequent firmware updates, having to update hardware frequently and of course worse of all the PC side of sage is better than the mac side.. I hate windows!

So if you are someone who has the time and expense to spend into a whole home solution such as sagetv, with its quirks (any software crashes eventaully), then you may want to give it a try.

i sold my sage HD extenders on ebay and have been very pleased with TiVO (has multi room viewing, ability to transfer shows to ipod/iphone), and of course my appletv with such an awesome simplified menu and itunes.

    Hope that helps
