If he were poor, then yes, for most offer a means test, and don't charge below a certain income level.

I don't think he is in that particular segment of the population. ;)

maybe in canada......but no, you don't need to be "poor" to use online tax software. Whether or not his taxes are simple enough to use the "free" product is another question, but it's not an issue of a means test based on income level.

So, it's totally free? Nice.

it depends on how complex his taxes are; what schedules and forms he has to submit (I'm not bothering to check to see what's included in the free package. It's possible that filling as self-employed he may need some forms that aren't in their free package, in which case he'll have to spend $30 or $35 to use the software)

As I said, simple returns for poor people, are free.

Good, so they pay nothing for this on-line service, right?

that's why they call it FREEEEEEEEEE

But I think it's safe to assume that intuit hopes that when their tax situation becomes more complex, these people will come back and buy intuit's software.

Have you used this "free" service yourself?

Otherwise, I will await someone in Middle America that has, without pay.

Depends. He said his income was $30k. If he's a family of four with a $30k income, he is by US definitions "poor" (the border is $44k household income with a family of four).

For the record, though, my division doesn't sell consumer tax products... and I'm just a numbers monkey...It would be pretty cool if I got a spiff for people using our products but, I don't. And I'm working right now as we speak... so, yay salaried jobs. :D

But my POINT is that he should consult a tax preparer for questions like that.

my nephew uses it, he's hardly poor, he just doesn't have a very complex financial life at the moment.

As for me, my taxes aren't simple, but it isn't because of the amount I make or don't make.

In the US, your tax returns get complex with the complexity of your finances, which isn't the same as the amount of income you may have
