Looking for Lucy Butler
For the time being, I'm just curious on what life is like in Nova Scotia, particulary in the Halifax area. I already know that climate-wise, it's pleasant in the summer, and sometimes very cold and snowy in the winter. Coming from New England, I can handle that. Layer up and you're good to go.

What about jobs, housing, life in general? I speak some "rudimentary" French, and I have no objection to converting miles to kilometers and whatnot. Oh yeah, I like Fudgee'Os. :D

I spent a year of university at Dalhousie in Halifax. My dorm was right downtown.

What a city. I'd like to live there some day.

It was beautiful when I got there (late August), and fall was absolutely amazing. Winter was very wet and cold.

There is a lot to do in Halifax, especially around the harbour. If you like drinking, Halifax is the place.

There are 5 post-secondary institutions in Halifax alone.

I have heard that it is sometimes difficult to find employment in Halifax, but I got a job at PCPC, the Dalhousie campus computer store (great Apple retailer as well) pretty easily.

You don't need to speak french in Nova Scotia. you need to be able to drink, though. The music scene is great. There is a lot of good music coming out of eastern Canada right now. Very small town atmosphere/attitude. Housing shouldn't be a problem. Employment is low, but you can always find work in retail. The oil industry is heating up too. Very relaxed and laid back kind of lifestyle. Very New England, you should be used to it.

I work with a guy who very recently lived there. I am originally from Nova Scotia although I am in Alberta now. I want to sell my house and move back...:(

Yeah I forgot to mention, forget about French. It's often harder to cut through the thick Atlantic accent of some of the locals.

That's all you need to know.

I live on PEI, so that's just across the water from NS and very similar.

Yes, unemployment is fairly high, and decent jobs are scarce. On the other hand real estate is very inexpensive.

It's a great place. Pretty, inexpensive, not all gussied up and gentrified.

Well even if I were, I would never admit it. :p

More pubs per capita than anywhere else in the world, I think. That's in Halifax though. I don't know much about the rest of the province.

Somehow I doubt the pub stat..., but you never know.

Halifax is nice, it's unique. Kind of has that New England feel, people there are fiercely loyal I found. If you were to sit 10 people from Nova Scotia down in a circle, 7 of them probably play an instrument, and 5 of them will play it well !

I spent most of my time two hours north in a town called AntiGonish. I went to STFX for a term. Winters are HARSH, but this year my relatives were warm and toasty while I was getting snowed on....

ya ya the drinking thing, every town/city/country says that. I say go live with Australians for half a year then rethink those statements....

Overall, the people (once you get to know them) are some of the best folks out there. Just the whole Maritime vibe is kind of "cut-off" from the rest of North America, and it's cool. Hopefully soon Halifax will get a football team, that would make my dad happy.

Get right pissed at the berrrr !

:D

No I don't know.

The most drunk I ever got was in Halifax. The 2nd most drunk I have ever gotten was in New Zealand. The 3rd most drunk was in Hong Kong, but I was probably the only one in Hong Kong that drunk.

The folks I lived with in Aus drank from waking up to sleeping. there are only so many hours in the day to drink and be drunk. I was impressed. I've gotten retarded in Halifax though, it's very easy to do....at the berrrr

Seriously. That's a pre-iPhone bump.

Sometimes you gotta.

Strong bump. From Nova Scotia.

I see you are relatively new around here - welcome!

Only been in Halifax once, but it left a strong good impression. One of the places I want to get back to... though, being on the far left coast it may take a while.

Oh, just in case your post disappears, and you're wondering why - they frown on bumping.

The trick is to be sneaky about it. For example.... "I've heard that Halifax has a lot of pubs too, eh?!" Basically does the same thing... but passes the " new content filter "... At least I think it does... ;)

lol I have an extreme fondness of Keiths. All kinds of it. I have been on the brewery tour probably 5-6 times lol

Yeah I figured I'd get in "trouble" for bumping it. but I did search for a newer one and nothing was found.

So figured whatever. Slap on the wrist at most(I hope)

I wouldn't worry about it.

However, I would worry that I haven't had a taste of Keith's in almost 5 years (TWSS). Not really able to find in here in SoCal. :p

Five lashings with a wet noodle, soaked in Keith's of course!

Went through a Keith's phase... but now concentrating on exploring the local brewers.. it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it, eh?
