Another alternative

USA Spec makes a nice interface that can work with many OEM radios: http://www.usaspec.com/ipod.html, and they are shipping a cable that is compatible with the iPhone 3G as well as all current iPod models. I've paired mine up with my VW Passat and the OEM Monsoon head unit and a holder from Brodit similar to the post above (check out proclip for tons of options:http://www.proclipusa.com/choosecountry/choosecountry.aspx). The really nice feature is this interfaces with the CD changer axillary port of the HU, giving me volume and track skip control from my steering wheel controls, and I have full control from the front of the iPod as well. If you are willing to get into your dash on your own, you can make a pretty clean custom install that is cheaper than the speckdoc products mentioned thus far.

Can someone with the unit pictured below confirm it works with the 2.2
update ? i just got this unit and it will transmit to the radio _only_ if the
charger connector is _disconnected_ ...sucks.... If i plug the connector in, i
can see the charging battery icon, but then no audio from the radio ...ugh

I am currently using this one, works like a charm. It charges my phone, outputs my music through FM and I use it as a handsfree device when I make a call or somebody calls me and I hear there voice through the car speakers:D:

I'm using the product above.
Namely, the Kensington LiquidAux Deluxe

I have both Aux-In and bluetooth in my car, and with that combo this unit works quite well. It charges my iphone, sends audio to my car's Aux-In, the bluetooth works fine while the iphone is in the cradle, with my car's sound system automatically switching over to bluetooth; and it holds the iphone stably where it's comfortably visible.

A wire goes from the LiquidAux to the car's Aux-In, but no wires to the iphone are needed, aside from the fact that the iphone is pluged directly into the cradle's dock connector.

All very good.

A potential downside for some users is that, if you don't have bluetooth in your car and the phone rings, you'd have to take the phone out of the cradle. That's because (as best as I've been able to determine) when the iphone is answering a call it ceases to send the audio to the line out. Which is too bad because the iphone's mike would work fine from that distance, and if the iphone sent the phone-call audio to the line out, it would be quite a decent handsfree setup even for users without bluetooth.

Here's mine (old pictures from when I had my 1st gen iPhone):

I'm using a KUDA mount: http://www.kudausa.com/products.php

The dock is by DICE: http://www.diceelectronics.com/ipod_connections.htm

Dock has plastic inserts for the various iPods, they do have one for the 1st gen iPhone even though their website does not indicate it. I am unaware if they currently have one for the iPhone 3G... you don't really need it though, I have the dock set up with no plastic insert right now and just put a couple layers of electrical tape on the back so that my iPhone 3G has a snugger fit.

I'm using the OEM Mazda iPod integration module as well as a Ridax charge converter so that my iPhone 3G charges properly when docked: http://home.swipnet.se/ridax/connector.htm?connipod.htm

I'm curious about this too -

Also - does this not wobble around? How sturdy is that long snake neck?

That's awesome, also important to note, if you have a 3G and the adapter is not compatible with you phone to charge it, go to the online apple store and buy the scosche adapter (http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS696LL/A?mco=MTIxODk3Mw).

That Spec-Dock adapter is really nice. I thought it would make a nice addition to my current car interface. Then, I saw the price. $149 for what amounts to just a dock. A little ridiculous IMHO. Half that price would be still be expensive, but a nice way to treat myself. I can't justify that kind of money for something so basic.

Mine works great still and my iPhone is 2.2 3G

charging issues and ipod 2 car adapters

I also use a Peripheral ipod2car adapter that plugs into the back of my Chevy Avalanche radio. The only issue is with the new apple products, my version of the adapter doesn't charge the iphone 3G.
I did find an adapter that is placed inline with the existing connector, and presto, works like a charm. They make other adapters for existing systems that don't work with the new ipod/iphones.

I have this dock, and it works great with the 2.2 update, charges and plays no problem.

If it is not playing, check a few things.
1. Are you using the hands free phone at all, or just using it for music transmitting and charging.

If you are just using it for music and charging but not phone, you can't have that little 3 inch cable connected anywhere, neither the transmitter or the phone. You just need the dock connector.

If you are using the phone, you need to make sure the 3 inch cable is tight at both ends, and the volume is ALL THE WAY up.

I don't use the hands free, so I just connect the dock connecter and only use that.

As far as if it moves, it wobbles a bit on bumpy roads, maybe like a half centimeter in each direction.
