Looking at getting a car and fitting in an after market CarPlay unit (in UK).

Seems to be very limited choice at moment and also older units that been out a while, eg from Halfords the Pioneer DA120.

Also I'd want DAB radio and a lot don't seem to have this. I'm not bothered on the unit having its own Sat Nav as I'll use Apple maps which will do for what I use.

So anyone in UK have CarPlay as an after market solution, fitted themselves, or professionally share please?

Thanks

I have a Pioneer F960DAB. Fitted it myself. Happy to answer any questions.

Thanks for that. Basically anything and everything ha ha!

Where did you buy it? Just googled and now it seems that one is discontinued.

How are updates for it? How is CarPlay, work ok after all te iOS updates etc? Full functionality still, bugs?

What car did you fit it in? Have you added a camera? Where does the USB cable pop out to connect it to? Any pics?

So if in CarPlay mode can you listen to DAB and still have the CarPlay interface shown, if want to change station do u then have to exit CarPlay mode, got radio, then change back?

How is Apple Maps? It'll be good enough for what I use Sat Nav for and probably better in some ways with it being more up to date that a factory Sat Nav.

Do all steering wheel controls still work when you fit it? For radio volume, skip etc?

Thanks

I bought mine off eBay but the newer version is around. I think it's the F980DAB. If you get the 7" screen you also get android auto. The f series units have an internal sat nav as well but they do a similar model without.

Carplay works fine and i am currently on iOS 10.3 without issue. Pioneer released an update for mine in jan this year so they are still supporting it.

I fitted it into a Vauxhall insignia and I also fitted a rear camera. I threaded the USB cable so it goes to my centre console.

Dab works fine whilst in carplay mode and I can either use the physical buttons to change station or use the steering wheel control. I had to buy an adaptor for the steering wheel.

Apple maps is unfortunately the biggest issue for me. If you want a full blown sat nav that gives you lane assist, junction view, avoids then Apple maps offers none of that. However as a general route finder and display, it is fine. I am hoping that Apple improve the mapping software soon or allow other companies to use carplay.

Thanks. Halfords only seem to charge £30 for fitting, obviously if need some parts/cables/facias then they'd be extra but would if doing a self install anyway.

Looking on the Pioneer website http://www.pioneer-car.eu/eur/products/multimedia-receivers/overview?carplay=1 it's quite confusing the range they have ideally I'd like the biggest screen possible as well.

As I say although I agree Apple Maps isn't perfect, for the times I'd need it, it would be ok.
