Yes that’s what I mean. I am in the same boat and to be fair I like the butterfly keyboard.

People like the butterfly keyboard..... until it breaks down. It's the reliability that makes the keyboard so terrible. When I got the '17 MacBook Pro a couple of years ago, I LOVED the new butterfly keyboard. Then unfortunately 5 months down the road I started to run into issues with it and had to get the keyboard replaced. Then again and again. I had a total of 4 repairs on it; so much that apple decided to replace it with a new '19 model but I declined since it had the same keyboard, just tweaked to try to not make it fail as much. I knew that the 16" was rumored, so I waited out till now and im going to bring it in this weekend to get it swapped out for the new one.

Hopefully your keyboard experience is a lot better than mine and a lot of other peoples.

EDIT: so answer to your question; No, im not keeping it.

To be fair I don’t use mine a lot. It sits on my desk mostly waiting for either when I really need a second machine for something I’m working on, when my 2018 mini has a fault or when I go away and want/need to be able to work while gone.

I should probably find a way to make better use of it all the time I guess.

I have a 2014 and 2015 15 and I think that I'll put both up for sale and sell whichever sells first. Then wait two months for the reviews to come in on this model. I have a 13 inch Work-issued 2015 as well so I'll use that for work and the other for personal.

I’m keeping my 2018 15 inch, not because I like it, in fact I dislike the damn butterfly keyboard and the Touch Bar escape key, not to mention how easy to over heat it, but I need a new smaller laptop to replace my 2015 13 inch more

I am keeping mine, mid-2017 15". Got an iPad Pro for the road and my laptop use went from 100% to 15%. I believe I got lucky, I went to the Apple store on June 19' for a keyboard replacement and got the screen, battery, and top case replaced free of charge.

Which old one?

I have a family member in the market and I'm hoping to catch them a 2015 model at the price it should have been all along at this point in history

(way below where they've been selling lately)

I'm debating. I have a 2018 15" with the quad-core processor and 512gb SSD. The $2.799 (U.S.) model would be a great update for me. The larger screen and all of the obvious upgrades, and the 8-core processor and 1tb SSD would be nice.

Ha, I have a 2017 15”, would love to have a real keyboard again, but that’s definitely not financially feasible for me so no I won’t be upgrading anytime soon.

No reason to sell mine. I have a 2019 i9 with 32gig ram and the Vega 20.
The screen size difference isn’t really anything substantial enough. The bezels look almost the same to me. Not really edge to edge.
The keyboard is the only thing I’m curious about as I use a external display most the times and magic keyboard and trackpad separate. But the 2019’s shouldn’t have issues with their keyboards or at least I haven’t heard of anyone having issues the last 6 months. So really there’s no reason for me to go crazy and want to upgrade for little things that won’t really change my work. Physical escape key I don’t care about. The arrow buttons is nice but I don’t really really care.

I really want to switch but I bought my 2018 15” in late January. It has no issues so far. And if it does, I get more than three years of free keyboard, top case and battery replacements for free unless they upgrade me to the 16” at some point.

Are batteries always replaced with the keyboard in the keyboard replacement program? I have a 2019 and am super bummed I missed the window for the new 16". However, now that you mention it, given the choice of another first gen keyboard vs a four year keyboard + battery replacement guarantee, the 2019 seems to be better for the long run.

I am looking to upgrade. Coming from mid-2014 Macbook pro with 16GB/512GB/Integrated graphics. I am glad I waited patiently for the 16" - there were a few times I broke down and *almost* ordered a refurb i9 2019 / Vega20 laptop. I will be getting the following config 16incher once the holiday return period starts - 8core, 2TB, 32GB, 5500m w/8GB. Primary use is for coding (xcode) and ML work (k8s, docker, VMs). Will run Win10 via Parallels. Not sure if I need 2TB for this, or stick to 1TB - but I keep the machines for 5+ years at least and so want to future proof.

yes the battery is attached to the case basically. its easier for them to swap the whole piece to take it apart so you'll get a new battery each time. I think upgrading to the 16" is rather silly at this point if you have a newer 2018 or 19. If something happens we get free replacements and you never know if they'll just swap the machine for a 2019 if you talk to AppleCare... Either way I wouldn't worry the small differences. im mostly curious about the keyboard and new hardware will Bring new issues.

I'll pass for now. When Apple releases a 16" MBP with a revamped design and/or a display that packs new tech (uLED, XDR?) I'll make the move.

is it worth paying an extra 1000-1500$ for? for something that you wouldn't really notice a speed increase on maybe slight depending on what you do.
Id imagine selling that model would get 1500 if you're lucky.

I have a 2018 MBP15 I’m not going to replace just because a newer one is out, if that’s what you mean?
You're not missing anything and the only reason Apple "discontinued" the 15.4" line is to eliminate product competition not with just this model but when they release another next year. Plus, people won't associate the plague of keyboard problems that will crop up soon enough, even on, second-hand purchases. User experience of having the keyboard with an ESC and returning to butterfly switches is primarily the most noticeable change.
Thanks Apple in forgoing more long-term improvements, redesigns with the top case on the '16-19 line to improve the keyboard quality. /s

Until now it's barely had much use. To give you an idea of how little, I bought it in September (maybe October?) 2018, and it has 8 (eight) battery cycles on it.

I bought a spare 2015 in January 2019 and I've been using it for work and my 2014 for personal stuff. I'm planning on selling one of them soon (I'll put them both up for sale and let go of whichever sells first), use my Office laptop for work and whatever remains for personal and wait until January for solid reviews. The configuration I want is base + 32 GB + 1 TB. I have about $23K in Apple Stock Profits over the past month to fund this purchase.

For me, personally, yes! I’m a photographer and videographer. I rely on my MacBook a lot. Also, my favorite MacBook was always the 17” pro, so this is as close as we’re gonna get to that size haha.
