Great knives are a joy to use; there is nothing worse than a lousy, non-sharp (it can be non-sharp without being blunt) knife when you're cooking. The frustration can be killing.

Another point I'd add, which might be tricky if they're a gift, is how they feel in the hand. I've got reasonably small hands so I don't like knives that are too heavy or where the handles are very bulky - similarly, I like the 8" rather than the 10" cooks knife since I find it better to manipulate. I've got a few Global knives with their sharpener which have lasted me a few years now and with regular sharpening stay in pretty good nick. But I'm fussy and don't let anyone else near them!

Is this a nice knife set?

My significant other has been bitching about our knives forever. I never cook, so I could care less, so I thought instead of an iPod he'd never use, I'd get this...

Should I spend a hundred more and get 10 pieces (two more small knives)?

I have Henckels pro. knives from Williams-Sonoma in 2000.. i bought 7 knives and Knive Block with tax it was around $500 total..

How i bought was per piece not a set.. Henckel knives have good weight to its size..

I would recommend that you get the knives professionally sharpen @ least once per year then home sharpener use every 2 weeks or so in between the pro. sharpening ..

Wow, I never knew that kitchen knives were such a science....I won't even mention the cutting tools I use, most of you probably would hesitate to call them knives next to all these pricey Euro-manufactured food scalpels...... :D

I should get some of those. Rob made a really nice dinner with appetizers and such and I got scolded for putting the "knife/spatula" for the spinach/artichoke dip in the washer.

I basically laid around and watched football (yes, homos watch and like football) while he cooked.

I'm getting him the knives tomorrow or the next day.

If your man is a "cooker", as in cooking hobbiest that take it VERY SERIOUSLY, you might want to look into some nice stoneware dishes for him as well. My wife went on this freaking Pampered Chef kick and we have all this worthless stuff from them (I don't need a cheese knife with 3 holes in it for what, aerodynamics, what I had was perfectly good! I'm Swiss, don't tell me how to eat my cheese!), but we got some great stoneware dishes for baking and whatnot. It bakes nice and evenly and it's a SUPER EASY cleanup. Just another nice gift idea for the cook in any of your lives.

What made me think of it was my wife constantly reminds me, don't put soap in the stoneware, you'll ruin it! Now I tease her by pretending to upend the soap dispenser into it. Works every time!

Muchios gracias for the suggestion.

I know he'll love the knives, so I'll stick with those. Problem is, that's about my Christmas budget for him, so he'll get that and maybe a few other smallish gifts.

I got the Henckels Four-Star (or maybe it was the pro series, I dont recall) 8-peice set for my wedding. I absolutely love them and would recommend them to anyone.

Well here it is, my client has finally paid his bill this morning (I've spent a load this Christmas, it's not often I'm waiting for a bill to post) and Williams Sonoma is backordered online, which means I HAVE TO GO TO THE ****ING MALL, WHICH HAS AN APPLE STORE.

Oh, if I get anywhere near it, I'm dead, smoked, finished.

*PANIC*

These ones:

Füri

Some of the best chef's knives in the world and designed right here at home. Similar to Global knives but a fair bit cheaper and chefs love em.

Just remember that the most dangerous thing in a kitchen is a blunt knife. Keep them sharp, clean them and dry them meticulously and never put them into a dishwasher. Sharp, clean and dry.

I got the Wusthof classic 8-piece set. In retrospect, I wish I would have gotten tha Henckels because of all silly reasons, they had metal labels on the handle versus stickers on the Wusthof...and I don't know if Rob knows that Wusthof is a good brand.

Meh. He can exchange em' if he wants.

The Apple Store - get this - only had $50 iTunes gift cards left. How stupid is that? And I didn't walk out with anything or need an intervention, either.

Happy holidays. :D

Oh, and no need to worry, I won't be allowed anywhere near them. He just bought new Henckels utensils and he freaked because a fork had a scratch on it.

I can relate to that. My girlfriend went on a similar kick with Pampered Chef. Generally I think their goods are a nice quality (including the stoneware), but we do have a fair amount of random ultra-specific items from them that almost never get used...

Yep, I saw that, but couldn't remember whether or not the handles were rivited. I checked the other day to see... they're the four-star. (Plus it says "Four-Star" on the blade). A very nice set indeed. Now all I have to do is buy the rest of the set.

knives and cooking

i have had some good japanese knives and some cheap ginsu "tv" knives and that didn't help me at all in cooking...but then i discovered the food network and my cooking improved and i use those cheapo ginsu knives

they never need sharpening and i don't cut myself with them since i use it correctly...they are not as sharp as the japanese knives but they are safe if you are careful and knowledgeable

Sooooo... how did he like em?

what about this knife set??

Hehe, I saw that in a store and laughed my ass off. Figured I'd reserve it for a divirce gift, should it ever happen to me.

How did Rob like the knives? I imagine he's heard of Wusthof right? Great choice, IMHO.
