It seems you are blaming Apple for this. You said you have a 15" MBP but you didn't say which year. 2011 or later have Internet recovery. You can create a thumb drive with 1gb of space using this method http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

Also if you'd back up your data you would not have this issue.

Damn right im blaming apple. Did you even read the thread?

Internet Recovery didnt work, i have had to install SL off a DVD and now install ML from App store.

Only taken all day.

Again, what year is your MBP manufactured? Also why didn't you back up your computer? CCC copies the OS and so does time machine. Why didn't you create a recovery disk assistant thumb drive? Apple provides several options for the user to protect their data. It is up to you whether you take advantage of them.

Recovery assistant isnt much use with a blank hard drive.

Time machine HDD i had used for 5 years went on the blink and i forgot to get it replaced.

Internet Recovery didnt work.

My Macbook is 2010 i7 2.66ghz 15"

Not sure how this can be perceived as Apple's fault. Hard drive went tits up and backups aren't available for one reason or another. Start from scratch and treat it as a painful lesson on why backups are vitally important...

I'm not sure backups would have helped in this situation. Apple does make the USB recovery utility an option, but I don't know how many people know about it or think about creating one before they have problems. Although, I'm sure the folks at an Apple store would let you create one.

You're right, it assumes you've set up the recovery drive via USB or other media. I did that right away just as a conservative measure and am thankful I did after suffering through one hard drive failure already.
