Hotmail has recently added exchange support so just use the settings as shown here in Outlook or even Mail.app, iCal and Address Book-->

This won't work. I wrongly assumed it would (quote below) because I thought I had read on the Office for Mac blog that they would be implementing ActiveSync in Outlook 2011 but they didn't, and Hotmail only exposed ActiveSync protocol, not the full Exchange Web Services protocol that Mail and Outlook 2011 use for non-IMAP Exchange server access.

It's moot anyways because Hotmail will be adding ActiveSync capability in June. The only unknown is whether it will be available free of cost.
 
Looks like we'll just have to wait and hope they finally bother to sort it then.
I'm getting sick of Thunderbird with mBox Mail not working some of the time.
