Say you pre-ordered a specific device, and you end up wanting to change color, capacity. If your picking up your order at 8AM - 8:30AM, anybody have the experience where they could ask for a different device configuration instead of picking up the one you ordered? Or does the Apple store not let you do that?

they would say = out of stock for that size or color

same case when i pick up 8+ gold and i want to change to silver
they check up all silver gone

If they have extra stock you can, so in this case no.

That leads me to ask, if you go to the store for pickup at say 8AM for your pickup, do they generally 'still have stock' by then?
For other people.

If you have a reservation they have a phone for you. They don’t sell reservation phones to walk-ins unless you don’t show up for your appointment.

My understanding is that they will do a reservation system. So when you are in line, ask the staff. When I went to pick up my 8 Plus for in-store pick up on launch day, someone ahead of me was a walk in and they asked the guy what carrier, model, color, size he was looking to get.

Surf Monkey! I remember you from a while back! Are you getting an iPhone X?

They wouldn't be able to accommodate that.

I imagine they have a stock for walk-in customers and a separate stock for customers with In Store reservations.

If you come in for In Store reservation and want to change configuration, you'd be at the mercy of what they have available for walk in customers.

If the line must be there, is it safe to say lining up at 8AM in the non-ship to store line likely to get me an iPhone X in the capacity and color I want? Or is there some other time that is better to guarantee a pickup? (I know we can't say for the X, but I am asking based on past experience with popular iPhones)

Exactly. Separate stock.

You can get the color and capacity you want when you order, not from someone else’s order. Line up November 2 if you want to pick from whatever stock they have for walk ins.

I get that, question is how early without being too early?

Hard to say though. Is there a reason why you want to get Silver over SG when you ordered SG? Are you going to use a case? IF you are going to use a case to hide the back, then it really won't matter. What you could do is go there early, reserve the color of your choice as a walk in. purchase it then and cancel your original order. Or you can pick it up and sell it for profit?

That’s why you preorder the color and capacity you want. If you could just walk into the store and get what you wanted on launch day, there would be no need to preorder.

If you are serious, start a poll asking which is the most ludicrous thread you ever started. This one wouldn’t even be in the top 3, and it’s ridiculous and without merit.

If you had a reservation for a phone, that’s the one you’re going to get.

If you want a different color or configuration, you can line up with everyone else that’s a walk in and if there is one available to you, they’ll sell it to you.

The reason being I look at the hands-on videos, and some of the points MacRumors people are making, and it's giving me thoughts about giving silver a second look. The phone I am using now is a silver color.

I do plan to use a case.

As much as I don't like that answer, you are so right...
But you already got the correct color.

You know how they say in school you should go with your gut feeling when you answer questions on tests?

Your gut feeling told you to get Space Gray when ou ordered. You are okay!
