I only have 3 months left on my Apple care and this is scary to see.

Does this happen even without anything apps running? If so then you have a bad video card.

By the way, what Mac and operating version of OS X are you running?

10.10.5 and first rMBP line with 650m. It's only ever really happened when stressing the system, like editing while having safari open or 4k video like u see here. It went away for a long time so I figured it was some weird software glitch that they got rid of with a newer version of OSX, but as you can see in the right picture, it's apparently back lol.

Attach an external monitor to your rMBP to see if you get the same purple line on the screen of the external. If you do, it's likely a GPU problem, if not, then it could be the display or something else that's causing it.

With 3 months left on AppleCare, I'd get that to an Apple Store Genius Bar pronto.

Bring along the pics to show them what's wrong.

DON'T hem and haw until after your AppleCare has run out!

There is an extended repair program for those computers for graphic issues: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
It will be fixed for free, so definitely take it in for service.

Just to update, I sent it in for repair. They asked about trouble shooting but I assured them I went thru many steps to see if I could fix the problem myself first. They listed the repair problem as "System video/sound - vertical lines" if anyone was wondering.
