I see. Outside the loop, or Tokyo proper.

Many fun places along the Tama River. :)
Yeah, it is a nice place to live. It is about a 30-min train ride to Shinjuku; so it is not that bad going to Tokyo. As a car guy, I cannot live in the Tokyo proper as I would be spending too much money on parking.

I am saying a good-bye to Japan in the long haul. I am planning to to naturalized to be an American.

If you're a serious Japanese "foodie," you might want to visit western Japan--the food there tends to be better, probably because of the Chinese influence.

I am a bit farther out. Luckily, I don't need to commute often. :)

Where are you from originally? Your prior message said that you had been in Japan for two years.

Depends on the food.

I do know that the best sushi and sashimi comes from around northern Honshu and of course Hokkaido. :)

Funny, I'm kind of completely the opposite. I find Japan more comfortable to live in and am not a car guy at all - hence I find living in America to be very difficult (I take public transport every chance I get). I don't mind smaller housing or crowded public spaces, in fact I prefer it...

I have a big decision to make in about a year as to whether I start looking for a job back in Japan or if I stick around in the English-speaking world. If I move back to Japan, it will be for good.

I would love to go to Japan for a couple of months.

maybe one day...

i really want to learn the language too

Roppongi is boring. Shinjuku and Shibuya are all about shopping, so if you like shopping, it's great. Shibuya has the busiest intersection in the world, I believe, but it's pretty fun to be in that crowd anyway when the lights turn red and around 1000 people are crossing the street every few minutes. :D Ginza is full of the more designer shops, from what I can remember.

Also, when you're in central Tokyo, you may have trouble finding an internet cafe for tourists. The best thing to do is to email from an Apple store. Seriously. You may be different though, since you'll have a mobile to email from.

haha! my aunt who lives there was talking about shibuya. she made a joke that it sounded a lot like S*** Buyer...

"For good" is quite a commitment, though. So far, I don't miss Japan at all as I have set my future outside Japan. I had a very good paying executive position in Japan; but, I came to the conclusion that I am more comfortable being American than behaving like Japanese and speaking Japanese in Japan and decided to throw away my good career in Japan to relocate back to the USA.

**If I can find a management position in American or Western business environment in Japan (which requires English most of the time to conduct business), I am willing to go back to Japan.**

I live in Kyoto studying astrophysics at Kyoto University. Have been in Japan about 5 years now. Japan is a great place but it's getting to that stage when if I don't leave soon then I never will! Even though I have ikkyu (日本語能力試験の一級) I still feel like a functional illiterate sometimes

And as opposed to you, I am completely opposite. I hate driving (been in too many close calls and gotten in bad situations with actual wrecks). I'm planning on moving to Japan when continuing my 5-8 years in the University.

Any good cheap places to live around Tokyo? Maybe specific places with good train access, since I know the Yamanote line has the great big circle (I went to Japan last year, Tokyo being my first stop after a nice shuttle from Narita to Shinagawa).
