I just ordered my mom a brand new 1.83 ghz macbook and now I'm worried that it may have this problem. If anyone has a white macbook, without any stains, please post here and let me know what you think about the issue. Post pictures too if you feel like it. It will give people a better peace of mind! Thanks.

EDIT:...the stain issue I am talking about can be found in this thread:

Had mine for a couple weeks and not a stain or scratch on it. I'm gonna say that the "staining" is actually discoloration from the incredible amount of heat coming off it. It's basicallly burning the plastic the case is made of.

I could fry and egg on this thing.

No stains anywhere. It is absolutely perfect, except for what happened in my thread "What a great way to start the day ;(".

Nothing on mine - but it's less than a week old. I didn't see it on the MBs on display at the Apple Store either and I expect they get heavily used by lots of dirty hands. Still, this issue has got me very worried.

I thought the issue was a chemical reaction as opposed to a heat one, no? On my blackbook there is not the slightest bit of heat by the handrests.

No stains after three weeks here.

I'm not sure I buy the "scorched MacBook" theory -- the palm rest area is one of the cooler places on the thing. If it was heat causing the discoloration, the area at the top of the keyboard, especially on the left hand side, would be cripsy black before the palmrest turned brown.

It might be heat combined with skin oils, but not heat alone.

I don't think it is a heat issue that is leaving these stains. I think most people who have owned an ibook would tell you that these stains are from dirt, sweat, etc. from your palms. The white macbook uses similar casing so I can only imagine that must be the cause. The stains really take away from the beauty of the machines. That was one of the main reasons I went with the powerbook line when I had to decide between ibook and powerbook.

It may be fine though with constant proper case.

    Good Luck!

The biggest issue/concern I have my with PB is that I wear perfume on my wrists. Because of this, I do not rest my wrists on the PB. I put something under them. I should just sport for the pads they sell.

With the MB I would assume it's the same thing. A chemical reaction. Why wouldn't the apple in store displays show signs of staining when they are on 12+ hours a day? In earlier years white coffee machines would stain due to the intense steam that would rise from them. I would presume that they've figured this issue out as the coffee machine issue is so primative.

Had mine since release day, no stains.

There are a couple of tiny, dark spots developing on the outside of the machine...I'm trying to figure out exactly what they are. Hopefully not mildew or something icky like that.

Chances are OVER TIME it will stain. This was a commong problem on the iBooks. Unless Apple has changed the materials on the Macbook over time oils from your fingers, hands, wrists will discolor. To prolong this process or possibly keep it from happeneing is to do the following:

1: Get something to put on the wrist areas(someone sells them I dont remember who though) or type with your wrists off of the notebook, which is how it should be done anyway.

2: Wash your hands before using the notebook. This is important.

3: Clean it at least once a week with iKlear or something like that. If you notice alot of oils and dirt on it, give it a wipe even if it isn't time to clean it.

4: Keep up with these habits.

These will not only keep it looking nice it will also make you happy because it looks nice. It will also keep the value high on it when you go to sell it.

The one I have now (my 3rd one for various reasons) has not picked up any stains yet...My last one; however, turned blue when I tried to clean it with the *Apple Certified* iKlear Apple Polish and microfiber cloth!  I actually just gave my current one a wipe down today and it seems to be fine at the moment. Here's to hoping there won't be any issues...the only thing that *isn't* dead sexy about this thing is all the problems people have been having...

I have to assume the apple store cleans them regularly just due to the amount of people using them everyday. In addition this sounds like a sweat related thing after hours of continuous use, either people who sweat too much or who are eating something specific that is excreted in their sweat.

lol I'd never even heard of this problem until I read about it on this forum yesterday. And now people are acting like every macbook has it. It's white plastic, so yes, it's going to show stains if you use it with dirty hands.

Dunno about you all, but I'm getting sick of a few careless people "discovering" a new "defect" with one or another mac model and starting a panic about it. This is the plastic over the vent all over again. These things get absurdly blown out of proportion, both in terms of prevalence and seriousness.

If you take care of your macbook it's going to look just fine. Seriously.

see I am on the vote of just give up on the palm rest area it is going to get stained no matter what. Even on laptops with dark palm rest over time they start showing stains from sweat oil and dirt getting on them. The oil and sweat on their attrack more dirt out of the air as well as what was already on the hands.

That area is going to get discolored int he first year and there is justn ot much you can do about it with out being overlly protective of it.

If you just give up at the beginning and deside not to care to much it not goign to bother you and you be much more relax and enjoy the computer more. Just take a cloth to it from time to time and you be fine.
