Anyone notice their Mini get slower after adding Go Flex Desk Thunderbolt adapter?

Does anyone else have the Seagate Go Flex Desk Thunderbolt adapter?

It may just be coincidence, but since I added it to my 2011 base Mini, I'm seeing a lot more beach ball just doing random things like Safari, and I hear the drive startup at the oddest times, like opening up a new Safari window which will then beach ball.

I just have a 3TB HD in the Go Flex, and it is only used for media storage so no reason it should spin-up at random times like it does.
