Ditto, both MB and iMac run LOD on 10.5.3.

If you don't mind, could you please give me a run through of how you managed that? I used the patches and even used the native installer for diablo 2 and still i get a message that says it quit unexpectedly when i try to open the game. i could rly use some help

I'm having the same problems with both SC+BW and D2+LoD

[UPDATE] I installed SC+BW on my fiance's white mac book and it runs fine. I've sent apple this information to see if they have anything further to say. It seems pretty unlikely that this is a problem with the game.

-------
I contacted both Blizzard and Apple. Blizzard is walking me through a bunch of stuff like checking my internet connection, reparing file permissions and running fsck. This is a fresh install so that stuff isn't really necessary but I've done it anyway, no change.

Apple's developer told me the following:

Hi ----------,

Diablo II LOD 1.12 crashes instantly on 10.5.3

Greetings,
Intel Core 2 Duo on OS X 10.5.3 (whereas an Intel Core Duo, also on OS X 10.5.3 works).

The install was originally on my older Intel Core Duo MBP (where it plays flawlessly, as on my archaic PB G4), and I copied the directory to the Macbook. (Just to be clear, my wife and I have many copies of Diablo II and LOD for our PC's and Macs (we love this game!), I just can't find our Mac install disks and my wife wanted to play against me on her new laptop.)

I've heard folks say that disabling OpenGL helps, but I can't even get the video configuration up. ("The application Diablo II quit unexpectedly." Console says it's a bus exception, and I've got the problem details available obviously any time.)

Any help or info would be appreciated...even if it's just to tell me there's nothing I can do, and to wait for 1.13.

Thanks muchly,

-- Morgan Schweers

The reason it works on your wife's MacBook is because it doesn't have an Nvidia card in it. The problem is that Apple disabled 256 color modes for Nvidia cards in the latest updates to Leopard. And Diablo II? Well, it runs is 256 colors, so it'll crash immediately on startup. It's a simple fix, but it's Apple's problem, unfortunately. They need to re-enable 256 color support in their Nvidia display drivers. :(

crimrow

so are you saying that there's nothing i can do? ive been told it should run fine if i do this or do that and when i do, nothing gets changed it still doesn't work. when apple says the issue is closed, do they mean that they're not gonna try to figure somethin out with blizzard?

if so then its a good thing that I plan on using part of my hard drive to install windows xp, seein how i've had no problems with that OS when it comes to video games.

god this sucks i love diablo 2 and havn't played in years.

Greetings,
Thank you, very much, for the info! Unhappy about the broken issue, but glad to know what the answer is.

Them ridding the 10.5.3 of 256 colors has also messed up a bunch of other games such as Fallout, Fallout 2.etc... they gotta fix this and be aware of what they have done! who did you contact exactly? We should all send them repeated emails until they fix this

I logged into my adc account and filed it with the bug reporter. The account is free so I don't see why a lot of folks couldnt report their problems.

Another update about my apple bug report!

Below is my most recent reponse to and from Apple. I pointed out the whole "it works on a macbook but not a macbook pro" aspect of this oddity and it seems they might actually consider looking into it. Here is to hoping.

I understand this issue is closed. I did want to write back to let
you know that with OS X 10.5.3 on my fiance's mac book (not pro),
starcraft runs fine. Her laptop does support 256 color mode. Mine
does not.

It seems strange that this is a problem with the game when it works
fine on one Apple laptop but not another.

Thanks

I'm going to try to reinstall older Nvidia drivers to see if that works...here's hoping.

More info from apple

Looks like they do know about this already and the original report is bug #5973249

Very interesting that the people on the front lines aren't doing a very good job of informing people of if a bug already exists or not.

Crimrow, are you sure it works on macbook 10.5.3? I just got one and its got mac OS 10.5.3 and diablo "closes unexpectedly" when i try to open it. Its getting frustrating because everyone is saying that different things are causing it. I've heard that Apple disabled the 256 color mode with the newest update but i don't know how your fiance's macbook 10.5.3 can play it.

My understanding is it works on macbooks, not macbook pros, because of the difference in video cards.

I tried reinstalling the older drivers but that didn't work. So, now I'm back to 10.5.2 but D2 crashes if I try to play in full-screen. Ah well, there's windowed mode.

Just for the record, Diablo II LOD works fine on my Intel iMac running 10.5.3. Wonder whether it's causing more of a problem on MacBooks than on iMacs. Thanks, Blizzard, for keeping an eye on these things and responding! Diablo rocks (still).

Your iMac clearly is using not using an Nvidia video card. Diablo 2 is broken for ALL Nvidia users using 10.5.3, as far as I'm aware.

To downgrade to 10.5.2, you have to re-install Leopard and use the 10.5.2 updater instead of using Software update. I wonder if there's a time machine way to back up your system and restore like that...

thanks

i guess i could try that. now how do you go about doing that exactly, i'm still kinda new to macs.

Same issue as Sirlin

I just bought a brand new intel power mac running 10.5.2. One of the very first things I did was install D2 and LOD with the osx native installer (from the disk, and then tried from Blizzard's site). I still get the "quit unexpectedly" error no matter what. I can't even access the options palette or change any settings.

Online, I've seen everyone saying that 10.5.3 breaks D2, but I can't seem to get it to run on 10.5.2 for the life of me. The only other mention of this I've seen online is in Sirlin's post on page 1 of this thread. Does anyone have any idea what's going on or are we the only ones having a 10.5.2 problem?

Any responses are much appreciated. I already had a hell of a time getting the game (four day battle with the postal service about my own damn address!), and now it won't work!:(

yea im runnin mac osx 10.5.3 and i had the same issue. the only thing i found that could fix it is gettin windows xp and partitioning the mac HD to allow me to start up in windows or mac. After i installed windows xp I installed D2 and it had some problems but then after installing LOD it runs fine with no issues :). kind of an expensive fix but i was pissed off that I couldn't get it to run after hours and hours of trying different things.

This has been addressed. It's NOT Blizzard's fault. Apple "broke" the Nvidia drivers so that 256 color support is now gone, which is what Diablo 2 runs in. We should all be yelling at Apple to put this back in. I can't imagine why they removed it...

Since the news of the no-CD patch, I decided to install good old Diablo II on my Macbook SR.

I am runnng 10.5.3.

I did a full LOD install, but on the Cinematics disc the installer crashed and I had to start over.

I downloaded the latest patch, 1.12a and installer for OSX from Blizzard.

I was able to install the entire game now. I patched it and it won't run, same thing as you guys. It's not just an Nvidia thing.

I'm not sure how some users are getting it to run on Macbooks with 10.5.3, unless it doesn't work with the X3100 and they have the older Intel GPU.

My Starcraft Broodwar doesn't work either, but Warcraft III FT works.
