No longer true. There are lots of iPhone 4's sitting in Apple distribution centers. AT&T draws from these centers. Plus they have plenty in their stores unless you live in smaller market areas. Apple forced AT&T to wait for phones from Apples plant in China only in the first month after release, so as to insure that Apple would have the upper hand. Now with slowing demand Apple is treating AT&T fairly. So at this point you are probably screwed unless you can find a phone in stock from a store. AT&T basically ships brand new Apple phones from the factory.
AT&T just inform me that i wont get my iPhone 4 til 3 week from today, so i guess im screwed lol

Uhm ya, I am sure AT&T put people on 2-3 week waiting lists all way through June-July-August (early, not sure bout mid) instead of shipping the phone from the fully stocked distribution center just so people believe the iPhones are in short supply. It must be the major metro cities like my area that get all the phones. That sucks, Apple could do better than that. Yet then again if they did, it would blow their cover. They love to manipulate the customers into believing that iPhones are in short supply. What a load of BS.
Ordered mine last night and it was 5-10 days. Praying it's got 4.0.1 but we'll see.
update: order had been shipped, that was quick.
just wondering is there anyone got an iPhone 4 with IOS 4.0.2 installed from AT&T recently?
i just placed an order last night, hoping to get 4.0 or 4.0.1.
