That can definitely be a problem:

I hope they fix this "issue" in OSX 10.7 and give us real resolution independence.

Until then, I'm a bit afraid of high PPI displays.

Of course if one can really take advantage of the added real estate and boost one's productivity, then that could be a bearable trade off.

You hit all the points that I've considered and pondered.

Yes but, at the same time, I don't think support for 16:10 resolutions will be dropped anytime soon.

Yes, I totally agree and should have noted that as well in my prior post. There should be a world for both resolutions in future game software for many years to come.

1) Yes it's more future proof, in terms of:
- pixel density (hopefully one day enjoyable in PERFECT resolution independence, iOS style)
- aspect ratio
- audio over Mini-DP

2) Yes, being able to upgrade the GPU is definitely a good way to tame this beast.

That's the latest and greatest ACD, make no mistake. Probably in your situation I'd take the 27".

BUT....
- small-ish system fonts and UI elements
- lower FPS in gaming than one could obtain on the 24" ACD, at native res

Play a bit with a 27" iMac and see how big is the former issue for you.

Well you've broke everything between the two displays nicely, once again. Nothing for me to add to your analysis really :p

Unfortunately I had already been to the Apple store and played around with both displays and I still walked out confused. The smaller PPI is noticeable, and yes, it seriously frightens me too, but then again, possible support for resolution independence in 10.7 gives me some hope.

I had been considering taking advantage of J&R's sale on the 24" but noticed they are now out of stock. That was the best deal I could find new, so I think this makes the decision easier for me now. So I've made up my mind and I'll be going for the 27" ACD like you suggested. :) One thing that continues to also be a draw for me on the 27" for me is it's only just $200 additional cost for the upgrade, which I think is very competitively priced coming from Apple.

Looks like I'll have to deal with the smaller PPI and work with command +/- for internet usage and I'll probably have to use more of the control + mouse scroll for manual zoom ins in Logic until Apple can offer us something good in 10.7. I've got music gear between my keyboard and the display so I'll have to think of a creative way to position these to bring the monitor up closer than I intended.

Anyway, thank you for all the help. Your breakdowns of both displays were spot on :D
