i’m just wondering if anyone has successfully done this? Did it overheat and throttle?

How about the regular 7700? Any issues with that?

Thanks.

You can just order one from apple with the 7700 in it, it is a supported chip it would work fine, however I can't see why anyone would ruin their warranty on an iMac by doing a self upgrade when they can either just sell the machine with an i5 and buy one with the cpu they would like or order the i7 in the first place.

Thanks. I'm aware of the warranty implications. I have bought it specifically to open and upgrade. A little project.

I'm, also aware you can buy this iMac with the 7700, but I'm not sure if the cooling is different, despite still being a 65w TDP CPU, I have read that some people had experienced fans on full at the slightest CPU activity, so was hoping someone with that kind of info might reply.

The 7700k, I can understand being too hot as it has a 91w TDP.

It appears that it throttles under full load.

Now if you delid the CPU and use Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut (warning conductive). You might be able to avoid throttling.

If you are willing to live with a hole in the case. You might be able to run a liquid cooler outside the case and cool it. Perhaps just cut out a square and have a Cryorig H7 protruding out the back.
