I have a 2017 iMac and need some extra USB ports, I've used one of these for years but he plastic is degrading and becoming sticky, also seems to take ages to charge an iPhone. I've had a quick look on Amazon but am not inspired. Anyone recommend a good one? Will I still need a powered one or will a Usb C one provide enough power to charge an iPad?

Check CalDigit TS3 Plus. It's very good, especially for MBP.
Wow, that's expensive. I thought that he was looking at something that was in line with the prior commentor suggested, an Anker multi-USB port. I have one that has six ports that are connected to my computer, so they support a number of external drives, and then also has two charging ports to which I've connected a couple of USB cables for charging my iPhone and iPad. I think it cost me $40 or $50, and that should do the trick unless you need the USB-c ports.

Thanks for all the replies.
I’ve bought Anker stuff before and haven’t been disappointed. They seem to have un-powered ones that look good and powered ones that look boxy.
I don’t need anything like the Caldigit hub as I just need some extra USB ports.
I don’t mind whether it’s usb A or C as long as they can supply enough current to charge an ipad or 2.

I think the Anker 10 port might be the one to go for, there seem to be a few negative reviews on Amazon, but I suppose there are always negative reviews? Thanks for all the replies, I’ll keep looking for a bit then decide.

Anker brand gets high recommends,
but i have no idea...

reading lots of reviews might be the better option
Problem with reviews there alway the one star people who say It go so hot I could fry egg on it, my WiFi quit working, the port I bought it for quit working after a month, etc. Very frustrating when these thing cost $60 and up.
