AMD released updated Windows drivers for the latest iMac & 5700XT a few days ago, on 09/08.
Those aren't actually updated drivers, the ones from 9/08. Those are just offering the initially released 19.50 drivers for separate download. 19.50 drivers are actually about 6 months out of date (they are from early 2020). Up-to-date AMD drivers would be v20 (20.3 is the current driver version) and it matters quite a bit as you can't run some new games on v19 drivers. As a major example, you can't play Star Wars Squadrons in Bootcamp with official drivers because it requires v20 drivers. Hopefully Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 don't have the same requirements, or else I'm going to be really upset. It's one thing to say "these drivers don't get all the perfect optimizations" but it's another thing for a brand new, high-end computer to be completely hamstrung by not providing proper drivers.
My advice would be to get an egpu RTX card. It ran like a champ on my MBP and razer core. Vastly better than the 5700.
The Pro 5700XT runs amazingly well with the official Apple/AMD drivers. This card can run things like Witcher 3, Wasteland 3, and The Outer Worlds all at 4K smoothly around 50fps at ultra settings. This is with the v19 driver, which is out of date but still good enough for gaming. My point is that there is at least one major new game (Star Wars Squadrons) that simply refuses to run on the v19 driver, and so can't be played on the 2020 iMacs at all because AMD/Apple haven't released a driver with the right version number yet. Paying $700+ for an eGPU to make up for the fact that AMD/Apple won't give timely driver updates isn't a great reason.
My experience with my 5700XT in Windows has been outstanding. 2560x1440 at full details in COD and XCOM2, and full 5k in the Sims4. I’ve installed and played a couple other games but I’m stuck playing these now since they look so good.
I know this is an old thread, but what is the best guess for the amount of improvement different drivers would provide. Like, is there a sense that updated drivers for the card could net 10-percent gains in framerate or more? The eternal hope of GPU optimised bootcamp drivers 🙂
Not high on the priority list I am afraid.
