Well, I've never tried any kind of smoking or drugs either, and although I do drink I don't do so heavily (in so far as my alcohol intake is comfortably within what's recommended). It sounds like you're pretty good at resisting temptation, darkwing – are there any particular reasons for your abstinence, or is it just something you've never fancied?

My father never drank, and he's a good influence on my life. Also when I was six I went to get a soda but it was dark and the soda was a beer! Dad had guests over and it was BYO(beer) and they left one behind. It was like fire in my mouth and I spit it out and was washing my mouth out and everything. I hated it. I still remember it vividly. Plus, it smells nasty on top of that.

Perhaps the way to prevent alcohol abuse is to give your kid a sip of something strong enough to make them uncomfortable at a young age.

Didn't quite work out for me. My dad thought he'd be a jerk and 'showoff' to his buddies; told me that the stinky can of bubbly stuff in his hand was sparkling apple cider, and as a 5 year old, I trusted him and had a sip even though it smelled awful-- I couldn't stand beer for a long time, but I'm starting to become fond of a few brands.

I've never smoke pot. Or taken any recreational drug. Ever. People sometimes act uncomfortable when I bring that up, as if I'm getting up on the preaching pulpit. But I simply state it as a fact.

But I've drank. I've only met one person my age who's never drank, and I only know a handful of people who've never smoked pot. It's odd but people in their 20's today are much more likely to have smoked pot than people from the "hippie generation" that helped popularize the stuff.

When the hippies did it, it was the counter-culture and "different." Thus it was a minority. Now a days, it seems weed is the culture.

EDIT: About the marijuana smelling, I wasn't talking about "clam baking" in a car or anything, lol. Let's just say when some of my friends are in possession, I can smell it on them like a drug dog and it smells like good, in the same way that gasoline smells good, but I've no intention of drinking the stuff.

Lol I was going to say that I love the smell of gasoline. I've only smelled pot when it was done in high school bathrooms when I was younger. I don't care for the smell at all.

Now that I've given up caffeine, alcohol's pretty much my only vice. Never smoked, and I've only just sampled pot and harder drugs.

Good point about caffeine. I love my diet soda. I drink a lot of caffeine free stuff, but I've been known to chug a whole bottle of diet pepsi in a day. I guess that's true about anything we eat now a days, though. Better living through chemistry. :)

The first time I smelled pot was in 8th grade at a concert at the San Jose Arena... honestly? I turned to my friend and said, "Eww, people here need to seriously take some showers." She gave me a dirty look and said, "Uhh, are you serious? Hah. That smell is weed!"

I've never touched alcohol, probably never will.

Excellent! I brought it up because most of the girls I meet at school poke fun at me when I won't partake. My friends at work tease me. I don't mind them doing it, but I hate when they try to pressure me to. Oh well.

I make a good DD. At my boss's birthday party last year, my car was getting a new clutch so my friend at work picked me up in his new Accord. On the way home, he threw up twice in it. Car was only 2 weeks old!

He also serenaded our boss with his own Vietnamese accented rendition of "happy birthday to you."

I'm 32 and probably drink and party more now than I ever have. A lot of people kind of get it out of their system when they're younger (high school and college), but I was (and am) a big geek, so I didn't get out much during those years.

I think alcohol is great. True you can have tons of fun without it, but then again being intoxicated is inherently pleasurable. I see no good reason to deny myself pleasure. I just don't see drugs (or sex) as a moral issue at all - only a health issue. As long as I don't endanger my health it's all good.

I'm not sure drinking is considered a "moral" issue. Neither is sex. Seems rebellious liberals and moral Conservatives all get drunk and fornicate. Oh well. :)

I'm a geek, but I try to get out when I can. I've been to bars and clubs with friends but it isn't my thing.

I'm 22. Never drank, never done illegal drugs. Not only I am against them for moral and social region, but for economics as well. Drugs and alchohol are not cheap.

Hi Dave. Agreed with you on economics. I figured out my friend who smokes spends over $1000 a year on his cigs, and he's only smoking about half a pack to a pack a day now. They're expensive in California, though. $5-$6 a pack for what he buys.

thats my thinking too. sure they wont say it, but there must be something there, deep down thats telling people to forget everything and not worry.
like i said. me and my mates dont drink and we love life. we do loads of crazy adventures and daft things which i think makes you happier inside. maybe if i didn't have those mates, but mates who wanted to go to the pub all day i'd be different. and because of the lack of exercise and fun i'd be just like everyone else at my uni?

the heaviest drinkers i know are the unhappiest inside. but maybe its just the people i know. i know that tragedy and other crappy things can turn people to drink.

Agreed with you and ohcrap. It seems to me that many people need to enhance or change their reality and they go about it the wrong way. I was not happy in my life. I was 23 and still not done with college, so I kicked it into high gear and went back to it. I lost weight, met a nice girl (who has since come and gone hehe), and am going to have my MS degree in June. I worked hard to meet the goals I set for myself, and that keeps me happy every day.

I do any drug I can get my hands on. My favorite are the narcotics--Percocet, Vicodin, etc.

I give you credit for not taking/drinking anything. That lifestyle was just not meant for me.

Congrats! Sober is cool :)

I drink and blaze, but not excessively. But I would never even think about smoking a cigarette. It has no appeal to me whatsoever. When I see a girl smoking (cigarettes), it is the biggest turnoff ever. It just sickens me.

I find myself being the only one who can answer yes to this question ("anyone sober?") more and more since coming to college :p.

The other night at a club a drag queen bought me a drink. Actually he was part of the staff of the club, he knew I was under 21, but I had been dancing on stage the whole time and I was all red in the face, and he was like "you really need this" and he handed it to me. I told him thanks, but I don't drink, and gave it back to him even though I saw the bartender make it. I felt kind of bad, but boundaries are boundaries.

Actually, that embodies why I don't drink. I would lose any self control that I have as soon as I start drinking. I'd have sex with random men and I'd wake up in random beds. Not how I want to lose my virginity...

So, at 18, I have yet to drink too. Same goes for drugs. I've been around drinking and weed all my life though, they are both fine in moderation. Moderation is the key to responsible drinking, and I lack it :), so no drinking for me.

But you forget that one oral fixation leads to another ;)

Me too! What are you drinking?

I am drinking Smirnoff Green Apple Vodka. It's disgusting! But it's quick :D

My local bar sells $2 22oz beers, so I've been bounding them before and after my midterm today. You gotta love college........but not as much as I love beer.

People only react badly because they're afraid you're going to judge them or perceive it as a flaw. Everyone has different reasons for doing things in their life, and I guess if a person never wants to try the plethora of altered states nature provided, that's their decision. If they start condemning me for doing it, we're going to get in an argument, but beyond that, whatever... To me it's like, going swimming, or flying in a helicopter, something like that... Lots of people don't like to do those things, and lots of people do like them. And some have never tried.

As to myself.

I can hold my own with drinking, but I don't really do it often, if we're at a club or with good friends for lunch or something, but I guess I've started to outgrow my days of downing a fifth of tequila and running around downtown like a maniac. Well, we'll see.

I don't really play with hard drugs anymore. No stimulants including caffeine. Prescription narcotics... ahh, my lovelies... but even those i take only when i'm supposed to now... huh. when did i get to be so boring?

rainman,

You speak the truth!

Great comments!

23 years. Don't drink, never had, not planning to.

Some bad alcholism in parts of the family and, knowing how bad I can be at limiting myself, I'm not taking any chances.

My friends all drink so there's no end to the offers. Though they always know what answer to expect. :)

No (illegal) drugs. I'm not sure if I'd be able to do it moderately anyway. Doesn't help that a childhood friend of mine have had some serious drug issues (the "it's a wonder he's still alive" kind).

Don't smoke either. Never saw a reason too. None of my friends does either, though I'm not sure it'd matter in the end even if they did. I've always been stubborn and done my own thing :p

Whilst I try not to regret the past, I hate how wasted I used to get in my late teens and twenties. I couldn't handle it and would try to keep up with everyone. I didn't necessarily lose control or pass out, but you're a completely different person while inebriated. I finally realized 15 years ago that even a couple of beers made me feel different, in a way I wasn't comfortable with anymore. I'll have one every so often right before dinner sometimes.

EDIT: alcoholism in my family so that's another reason I quit.

Smoked on and off for a number of years, quit that, too. No other drugs, though, ever.

So... good for you non-partakers!

P.S. I have a friend who (my age - 42) still brags about his pot-smoking, and how cool he is because he gets away with it. You'll all be glad to know he's a man of the cloth. No drug tests in that profession!

I have an occasional drink, but since I dont like the taste of Alcohol (except in cooking), I've never been drunk, so yes, I'm sober.

We just bought a pool table for the new house, right next to the pool table is a china cabinet, built into the house when it was built in 1900.

That china cabinet is now filled with pint glasses, shot glasses and about 25 bottles of liquor.

We drink.

Oh man, do we drink.

Congrats though, its always great when you have something you believe in that is hard to stick to... and you stick to it. Very commendable!
