Of course everyone knows about the famous iMovie 08 controversy, which caused people to stay with iMovie HD for a while. But in 2019 does anyone still use it? Not even sure it works on Mojave. I still use iMovie HD 05 quite often because it works better with my setup.

I have occasionally used it for certain projects. And yes, I was able to get it working on Mojave over the past few years. Last autumn when I was importing a MiniDV tape I managed to finally recover out of a Canon Optura 50 camcorder I was using (with help from my college's TV department) that died in 2013 during a shoot, I tried importing the footage (playing the tape in my Optura 60 camcorder) into Final Cut Pro X but there was no sound being included. Same with when I tried it on iMovie 10; no sound included. So I decided to try out using iMovie HD 6 just for a fun little throwback, and it was pretty neat. It did take a little longer than it would if I used iMovie 10 or Final Cut Pro X. But I was pleased with the results, and in a way it reminded me of how I used to use Nero Video and Pinnacle Studio Plus during my Windows days.

In September 2016, I also did a YouTube Throwback Thursday upload by shooting a vlog of me in my Big Bad Wolf fursuit on my Canon Optura 60 camcorder and editing it in iMovie HD 6. See the result here...

I used to use it more when I largely used an eMac from 2005. Then when I finally got an Intel MacBook in 2011 I didn't use it as much anymore, since iMovie '11 now had many of the features from HD 6 carried over, ESPECIALLY the audio editing and effects, which iMovie 10 still has to this day. I've also noticed Final Cut Pro X seems to even have some of the same features and functionality as iMovie HD 6, including some of the same visual effects but improved (they've even brought back the Earthquake and Rain effects, now to wait for them to bring Electricity, Fairy Dust and Fog into FCP X without the need of third-party plugins!)

I too loved iMovie HD when I was still shooting with MiniDV and Hi-8 and it was one of the best versions that captured good quality video. I since replaced it with an older version of Final Cut Express 4.0.1 which in 2019 still works up to El-Capitan so I can use it with older interlaced video footage and convert them to progressive HD. I don't think iMovie HD will work on Mojave. My FCE (Final Cut Express) doesn't work on Sierra onwards.

Last year I also made this fursuit vlog where I demonstrate the effects in iMovie HD 6. I ran it on my late 2009 polycarbonate MacBook. Though the speed and Quartz Composer effects would not work with the MP4 files I recorded on my Canon Vixia HFR600 camcorder, the other effects worked fine, and I had fun showing them off, especially Earthquake, Fog, Mirror, N-Square and Rain. I also give a brief overview and history on iMovie's evolution since then, and how most of those effects can now be used in Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5.

I am still using iMovie HD. I am not aware of any comparable software in terms of simplicity and capability. I use it to combine video footage, still frames, and audio files. It is very convenient how you can import photos from iPhoto and audio from a file or through a microphone. It is nice to be able to cut clips at precisely the desired frame and then to precisely align the audio file with the video. It is so easy to include fades and other transitions. All done in a user friendly "watch you see is what you get" framework.

iMovie 06 HD works OK with Mojave 10.14.6 but it requires a simple workaround mod.
I would be interested to know how to get iMovie HD to work (fully and reliably) on any OS beyond 10.8. I would love to be able to use it on a Mac Pro 6,1 that will run only on OS 10.9 and later. I found that iMovie HD will sort of run on OS 10.9, but there are lots of problems. I would be elated to be able to run it under 10.9. It would be even better under 10.13. How is this done?

For Mac OS versions up to 10.14 Mojave, you'll want iMovie 6.5.1...

It's an unofficial build that updates it to run on newer Mac OS version with 32-bit application support. I've used it on said operating systems with minimal hassle...

While it's a fun throwback, for similar editing features and power, I generally use the modern Final Cut Pro. (Seriously, it even has many of the same video effects iMovie HD 6 had, but even better because you can control them with keyframes! Final Cut even has DVD chapter marks.)

Thanks for providing that information. I downloaded it and tried it in 10.13. I opened an SD project and imported a video clip. When you let it play, the audio is there but the screen is black. Is there something that needs to be done to make it work properly?
