I have an LG ultrafine 4K 24 inch display and have used it for quite a few years. The camera works well and the sound is good although there is some buzzing coming out of the grill at times but I think has to do with the plastic being loose. Curious for anyone who has switched to the Studio Display from this particular display what their experiences been like? How would you compare the sound and the screen?

This seems like a no-brainer initially, apart from the price of the Studio Display being pretty high, but all the unpleasant reviews have got me questioning the decision and wondering if I should cancel my pre-order for the Studio Display. It’s making me wonder if I should just go with an LG ultrafine 5K 27 inch or even the new Samsung 32 inch display.

Thoughts?

I’m on the same boat. Currently have the LG Ultrafine 4k 24" display and I'm planning to upgrade.

I really want to like the Apple Studio Display due to its better integration with macOS, but that price tag is a HUGE turn off.

Currently considering the Dell U3223QE instead.

I saw the Dell as well. But that and the Samsung have a great size and price seem much more reasonable. But I do appreciate good sound and apple has really excelled at that lately. In a review of the studio and the Samsung I thought the studio sounded better but not sure more than 1k better. Agree with you I’m hoping for better integration.

We periodically have issues with LG not waking up or taking a long time to do so. Wonder if studio would work better there?

I considered the Ultrafine 5K, but I read up that people experienced various issues that I went for the Studio Display VESA Mount and put my own VESA standalone mount with height adjustment. The 4K options at 27 and 32 aren't good option for Mac as they have scaling issues since macOS expects 220 DPI since it doesn't do non-integer scaling. It only does 2X scaling. Anything between non-retina (95-109 DPI) and 220 DPI has burry text issues, small UI or too big UI (2x 4K resolution is 1080p, which is too big for a 27" and losing space real estate), and other issues. The Samsung 32 inch is a really bad solution for macOS due to the lower DPI compared to 220 DPI. The same goes for the Dell 32 inch 4K. The only good solution is downgrade to a 2K 27" monitor and not have a high DPI display if you can't afford a Studio Display. I would not recommend a 4K display, unless you can live with 2x scaling at 1080P for a 27" monitor. I would absolutely not recommend a 32" 4K since the text will look blurry and bad.

This article goes into detail on why 5K is the only real good option for 27" on macOS, and there aren't any real good options.

If you intend to keep the monitor long term, perhaps the higher price of the Studio Display might be worth it. You can wait until WWDC if they announce a Pro version of the 5K display, but it will cost a bit more than the Studio Display.

Also, it appears the Studio Display supports DSC, so you can hook two Studio Displays to the same Thunderbolt 4 dock.
