Really depends on use. With white coat pockets, the Mini is much more useful than the full size iPad. I can just drop it in my pocket and not worry about leaving it some place.

I actually found the Mini to be LESS eye straining than my iPad 3. I found staring at small font on a Retina causes more eye strain. It's almost like my eyes are working harder trying to find the tiny pixels on a Retina screen and getting strained from doing that. Whereas I have no problems reading from the Mini or from my non-Retina 11" laptop.

To each his own.

No. Use my 3 for heavy use. Mini is more for games & using before sleep. I def. use my 3 more than my mini b/c of the screen.

Heavy use? That's a new one (not being sarcastic). What do you do on the larger one that you don't do on the mini? I'm curious how they both fit in your life.

the mini is a convenience device rather than the luxury device that the 9.7" is

Not sure if I agree. There's a lot of compromise required when relying on a tablet of ANY size so what exactly makes 9.7" a "luxury" device?

the pixel density and page size makes it feel luxury class, like wide first class leather seats on Steve Job's airplane

it's subjective :apple:

This is not the case for me. I own the original iPad, and I waited until Apple brought out the iPad mini to upgrade. It is more comfortable to hold, and it's nearly perfect for reading.

Same here. Haven't used the iPad 1 since I got the mini.
Will give the iPad 1 to my granddaughter. If I feel I need a bigger screen in the future, I'll go with the MacBook Air I think.

I'm keeping my iPad 3 in the living room on the stand as a photo frame on the table and I undock it to read magazines/surf/air video whilst on the lounge. I'll be taking my mini to work, out and about, and browsing in bed.

iPad 1 is on my fridge using fridgepad :D

I have heard this a lot since the release. Only thing preventing me from picking it up is the lack of the Retina Display. I would think both would complement each other. iPad at home on the couch and Mini when out of the house.

Pretty much sums it up.

I use both my mini and 9.7' equally. I use my 9.7' in class because I like the bigger keyboard to type on and I like using my mini around the house / in bed because is light

I agree. Some people like compact cars despite the smaller engine but finds it more practical for their day to day use while others prefer luxury sedans. It's nice to have options.

Yep, I've stopped using my daddy iPad 3. It's way too chunky, heavy and the apps kinda look 'too big'...

I'm honestly in love with the mini.

Someone said above that it's their worst product....made on the cheap? Have they felt it? Personally I feel it's one of their best feeling products! And the screen.... seriously, it's pretty good. The only place I've noticed it not being retina is the app store, everywhere is is fine. Even magazines.

Love...love it.

This.

The 10" iPad is definitely not useless. It's light, just not very light.

Honestly, it's not even that heavy.
It's about the size of a magazine and weighs the same as most hard cover books (minus the thickness).

The mini is a slightly cheaper paperback version.

I think the mini is the death of the original ipad size. People say well there is ipod touch and ipod mini but this is very different.

Viewing PDF's full screen the ipad trumps the mini.
Using it as a replacement for sheet music the ipad trumps the mini by a huge margin (even if it was retina)
Reading magazines the ipad trumps the mini
And that's just a few of the big issues for me.

While I agree the mini is awesome, there is no way it is the death to the original. Just because the mini meets your needs doesn't mean that it meets everyone's.

7" tablets will always serve a purpose. But the fascination with small tablets is a fad like it was with mobile phones. As 10" tablets slim down they will dominate. 5" mobile phones, 10" tablets are the future.

I am in the same boat as you. iPad 3rd Gen since launch day. Still love it , but the weight difference is HUGE. At the same time I love retina display. I just bought the 13" rMBP so considering selling my 3rd gen iPad for extra $ (could use it) I have still used my 3rd gen iPad but feels huge and heavy now. I do however wanna see what a 4th gen iPad is like. If it is really that much faster

No, both are useful.. iPad 4 for Magazines and Newspapers.. and when in bed .. Mini great for taking on the plane etc.. both are great.. you need to have both to appreciate one from the other.. :)

I agree with what this person said 100%. I am blown away that Apple would enter the 7" tablet market with a mediocre spec tablet at a premium price. The reason I am surprised is because I was expecting Tim Cook to continue Apple's tradition of innovation. If he wants to stay CEO he will need to change things fast, otherwise I expect stockholders are going to start speaking up about the recent stock plummet.
I agree .. Tim Cook better keep things Cooking.. :) or he is out the DOOR..the stock in dropping like a Hot Rock in Alaska..

Harsh words cardnialryan.

Worst ever huh ? Wow !!

Like you said everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I don't agree with yours.

As the world turns.....

Granddaughter/ipad1

My son wants my ipad 1 for his 4 month old daughter so he says.

At 40 eyes start to go bad yet at 52, my mini is perfect:)

Hang on! You just told the whole internet you got a small...!!

More power to you, man!

But yeah. My eyes now need reading glasses for basically anytime I use a computer, ipad, iphone or when I read. I'll never go down to the mini for this reason. Pity, if my eyes were still good, I'd definitely get it as I fly or ride trains every week.

Yeah... likely story!

I think there is a place for both....I am waiting for my LTE Mini and iPad 4 LTE to get here but im coming from an iPad 3, have a wifi iPad Mini and a Nexus 7....there are times like tonight I was sitting on the sofa watching the FSU-VT game using a regular iPad....then while doing other things I switched to the NExus....

ITs going to depend on what you do and whats makes the most sense....but for me, I'll take both sizes just for convenience.

I think the mini is the death of the original ipad size. People say well there is ipod touch and ipod mini but this is very different.

For productivity reasons (my own, I'm not generalizing here), I disagree with this. There are simply things I can do on a full sized iPad that are more inconvenient on a mini. If I were to look at it from a personal point of view though, I think I would prefer the mini, especially if it had a retina screen.

It's really a matter of what you use a tablet for, just pick the one that best suits your needs, even if it *gasp* doesn't run iOS.
