Here
I currently have a 7th generation 256GB iPod touch as a dedicated music device. I love the small size, but the battery is just “okay” and no biometric security is kind of lame.

Overall I’m happy with it, but the thought of a new $399 + cost of more storage small-ish phone is enticing. Anyone else think so?

I know there are dedicated players, but the wealth of music apps on iOS and iTunes smart playlists keep me away from seriously considering those.

To me the value proposition is not worthwhile for an iPod. I could easily buy an iPod Classic with 256GB of SSD storage and new battery for less than this. Probably pocket $200 of the new SE value. I also find that controlling a click wheel is far easier than a touch screen.

Of course if you are planning to use it with streaming services, a Classic is not an option.

You're trading off smartphone features for more storage.

For the same $399, you will either have a 64GB (presumably) iPhone 9, or a 256GB iPod Touch. And I doubt that Apple will offer 256GB iPhone 9. My guess is it will be just 64GB and 128GB for an extra $50. If you already have a phone, then stick with the Touch. But if you're also thinking of upgrading your current phone and won't mind the smaller storage option, the iPhone 9 will be a great value.

Imo using an iPhone 9 as an iPod is too expensive. For that, I'd just find a cheap Android phone with an SD card slot. Looking at Motorola US website, you can get a Moto e6 for $99, and it supports 256GB SD card (which is an additional $40-$50). Put it on airplane mode, and the battery life should be great.

Excellent suggestion. I've done that in the past but took it a step further and rooted the phone and removed the phone app. Standby from a full battery charge to completely dead was 52 days. Simply putting the phone in Airplane mode didn't get anywhere near that.

Even better. 👍

I have a 7 gen iPod touch and use it for music or streaming only and it handles that okay. I use a SE or old iPhone 6s like an iPod touch for watching movies and heavy streaming of music or radio. IMHO the old phones do better. However if you are like me and enjoy the headphone jack then soon the iPod touch will be the only game in town.
