Weight will be near the MacBook with a typical case, about 1060g.

Went from MacBook 12" 2017 to MacBook Pro 2018, the extra pound is massive, something about that extra pound is very noticeable. Without a updated MB soon, thinking of trying a 11" iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, same weight as MB with typical cover, about 1060g. Just don't know until I try it if iPadOS is good enough vs MacOS.

I posted on this exact thing last year. The weight difference from the 12" to the Air doesn't feel like much. The weigh difference from the Air to the 13" Pro doesn't feel like much.

But that jump from the Air to the Pro feels massive.

I'm still hopeful there will be a new 12" MacBook of some sort as part of the transition to ARM, but who knows.

If the apps you need are available on iPadOS, definitely give it a go as the cursor support is a game-changer for me.

I’m debating on selling my 2017 12” MacBook and replacing it with a 2020 Air. My 12” MacBook seems to be a rarity as it’s the fully loaded version with the i7, 16GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD. It’s literally in mint condition with only around 30 battery cycles. I got it late last year, so it’s still covered under Apple’s factory warranty until this October. In addition, I purchased AppleCare+ on it which is good through around Oct 2022. My main concern is how long Apple will continue to support my 12” MacBook with regard to MacOS. Being that my 12” is somewhat rare in terms of being the fully loaded version and having AppleCare+ on it, I’m thinking I could get a pretty decent amount for it based off what I’m seeing them sell for on eBay and Swappa. If I was to sell it, I’d go for the 2020 Air i5/16/512 configuration which runs $1499 plus tax. I much prefer the form factor of the 12” MacBook to the Air, but again, just worried about Apple’s future support for it. I’m a pretty light user in terms of what I use my Macbook for, and I’m never had any issues with performance on my MacBook. However, the Geekbench benchmarks for the 2020 Air, are way higher than my 12”...at least on paper. Wondering if I would notice a big speed And performance difference in real life. Plus, if I sold my Macbook for the Air, it would give me an extra three years of Apple supporting the device. I’m so confused on what to do...any suggestions, opinions?

Edit: I should mention that I have the 2018 11” iPad Pro and recently got the new magic keyboard/trackpad case for it. The magic keyboard is a real game changer for my iPad so I’m using it a lot more nowadays. But, there’s still things I need MacOS for that iPadOS just can’t do.

You have plenty of support time from Apple on your MacBook. They provide support from last date that they were selling the computer model and I see that they are selling the MacBook on their refurb site even now. I bought a 2012 13" MBP in 2016 from Apple and they are still providing support on it because of the sell date.

I’ve been waiting for a new 12” ever since they discontinued it. I have a 2012 15” Retina Pro and I always felt like it was too big and heavy. I was planning on replacing it with a 12” MacBook but then they went and discontinued it. I‘ve been waiting for a new version ever since.

Now that they released the iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard I picked one of them up and I haven’t touched my MacBook since. It’s not quite a perfect replacement for a real laptop but it’s really close. I’m still hoping that they eventually release a true successor to the 12” MacBook but I have a suspicions that they intend the 11” iPad Pro to fill that niche.

Are you using the magic keyboard on a desk? What about on your lap on a couch? I use my iPad mini in bed or traveling, but using my 2014 MBP 13” on my lap, chest while reclining on the couch gets a little heavy. I’ve thought of picking up a refurb MacBook 12” or the new Air. Basically, for casual browsing the web, texting, and emailing, I prefer the Mac OS and keyboard solution to my iPad. I could be talked into the iPad Pro and Magic keyboard if it can replace my lounging usage. But I look at the IPad Pro magic keyboard and it looks more like a fancy keyboard dock to me.

If you're mostly wanting a casual laptop for the couch, I can't imagine how an iPad Pro / keyboard combination would be more beneficial over a Macbook or MacBook Air. The iPad Pro looks fantastic if it's own right, and I think the keyboard is an amazing addition for someone who wanted it docked a lot of the time. But imho, the expense isn't worth it if it the dock is used once in a blue moon, nor is the iPad the right device it if it's almost always docked. I suppose having the iPad & keyboard is a sweet-spot situation, where you're going to be getting a good amount of use of the iPad docked and undocked.

I used to love the iPad until phones got larger, ultralight laptops came on the scene, and I got bored of Labyrinth.

I use it mostly on a desk. It’s very stable. Pretty much forget that it’s an iPad really just feels like a small laptop. It’s very light and quite small. I like iPad OS more than OSX for browsing, texting, emailing, Netflix, and overall daily use. it has a lot of refinements that OSX/MacBooks lack. For example FaceID is amazing, it has a better Facetime camera, touchscreen/Apple Pencil, and LTE. Also iPadOS/iOS has lots small things like autofill of one time codes from messages and better full screen support.
